No one starting with a clean sheet would do stereo that way. And yet the people starting with a clean sheet have delivered something worse. It started out ok. The bitrate was reduced subsequently. That's what happened with the BBC national stations. Many commercial stations always intended to use 128kbps, as did all BBC local stations. I have that in writing from 1998. Which is laughable, given what "the best" 128kbps mp2 encoders sounded like at the time! (i.e. even worse - far far worse - than now). Cheers, David. |

No one starting with a clean sheet would do stereo that way. FM is perfected and state of the art. It's is completely up to date and was able to adapt with new technology. DAB is 20 years out of date and has already been surpassed by other digital platforms and is not adaptable at the playback end. DAB is inherently flawed in its design. FM was not and is not. DAB should have been implemented with the processing power and ability to download all possible new future codec's and use them for playback. It didn't and DAB2 doesn't have the ability either therefore it is doomed as well. |

Besides which in 1998 AAC was already being used by iTunes and could run perfectly well on a P100 or slower processor. DAB was doomed from its very beginnig. It was dreamed up and implemented by complete clueless idiots. |

I take it either you've not heard DAB or not heard MW? The two couldn't be further apart. Yes, MW on my radio is crystal clear, DAB sound quality is worse. As regards stereo, some DAB transmissions may well be in mono. All AM ones (in this country) are. But they are not distorted like DAB sound is. |

Actually, because there's none of this new-fangled IF filtering, on AM, a crystal set is probably provides the highest-fi of all receivers. -- Ian |
