....on the purchase of our first HDTV.

Good morning. I'd like some help deciding whether to buy from a B&M store
or on-line, and if on-line, which store would be best for me. First, some
background...

Over a year ago, we cut the 'cable' and chose DirecTv, got the best deal by
doing for a multi-room package (5) with two of the kidz deciding they wanted
to pay the monthly nut to have DVRs and one DVR for the wife and I (Younger
Dotter wasn't working then, so has the regular receiver in her room). At
that time I subscribed to this group to begin to learn about hdtv. Also
began to read the AVS forums and want to thank all who have posted to both
for helping this 'noob' get my feet wet. I bailed out of both about the
time the Blu-ray flame wars were at their peak since I knew it'd be a year
or so before moving on to The Decision!!

I'm back.

Has there been a thread here or somewhere in AVS that could provide some
consensus opinions on which on-line stores are OK and which to avoid? I
know Google is my friend and was just hoping someone might be able to
pin-point some topics/threads.

putting it to work!

I have purchased four HDTV's (LCD, 2 Sharp, 2 Samsung) from Amazon.
Good prices, fast delivery, no problems.

I've purchased plasma and LCD flat TV's from the following merchants,
with good experiences each time;

1) http://www.amazon.com
2) http://www.buydig.com
3) http://www.lcdtvs.com

Ive never used its services, but NewEgg has an excellent rep according
to the PC mags & even "Consumer Reports", plus good info at the site
to help you decide.

As to the B&M stores, Id check to see what their return policies, no
questions asked, are, & for how long, and give that a lot of weight.
Costco IIRC is very generous in this regard."CR" says Amazon allows
returns w/in 30 days; Target & Walmart give you 90 on most
things.Seems to me, putting something in the car & running it back to
the store is a lot easier that shipping it back to an online seller.

Save all packaging until the warranty runs out.

Oh--are you in the UK?? NM, as Emily L. would say.Or is that CT??

For HD-TV I don't think you can do any better on-line than Amazon. I
bought an LCD HDTV from them about a year ago, and it couldn't have
gone smoother. A year before that I bought a large DLP HDTV from the
local Fry's store. That also went fine, but actually getting it from
Amazon was a lot easier, with delivery right to the house. So my
preference goes to Amazon.

Amazon likes to change prices a lot and they no longer offer post order
price guarantee so don't look at the price after you buy it.

Amazon ripped me off on a cell phone rebate a few years ago so I've not
bought anything there since. Bought our big screen Samsung DLP RP a couple
of years back from Fry's Electronics B&M store as they had a super deal that
was better than what was available online.

In my experience, all the online sites mentioned are good, as is Fry's
B&M. If you use www.pricegrabber.com or some other similar price
search engine, you might consider my screening mechanism. If I don't
already trust the site, it must have no less than 1/2 star under the
maximum (i.e. 5.5 stars out of 6) and at least 5000 ratings.

Good luck.
