Default Marantz Launches Blu-ray Players

Marantz America this week announced the launch of four new Blu-ray Disc
players, all of which feature Profile 2.0.

The "ultimate quality" UD9004, which can play "any 12cm digital audio or
digital video disc ever created" according to the company, also boasts 36-bit
Deep Color. It also boasts several features making it of interest to home
theater users, including a Vertical Stretch feature. It will arrive in August
at an MSRP of $5,999.99.

The company's "high-end universal" UD8004, which boasts many of the same
features, arrives in October at an MSRP of $2,199.99. The two other players in
the line, the BD7004 and BD5004, are available now at $799.99 and $549.99,
respectively.

Does that include Blu-Ray? After all, they are not digital video
discs (DVD).....

It seems there was a discussion about this a while back. There were
those that believe that blu-ray are not DVD, while others believe that
DVD is a generic term that can be applied to many formats.

Blu-ray discs *are* 12cm digital video discs. They're just not DVDs. DVDs
are 12cm digital video discs, as well.

To be more precise, both Blu-ray and DVDs are optical discs.

BDs and DVDs are both optical discs.

It would seem both are Digital Video Discs that have differing
formats. While a BD is also a DVD, a DVD is not a BD.

That sums it up quite nicely.

Does anyone know if Blu-Ray will be the last generation of optical discs? It
seems lots of companies are interested in flash memory these days. Disney is
including free memory sticks with some of its movie titles. Could this be
the replacement for Blue-Ray?
