Because that's the sustaining feed if anyone fails to opt out.

Why?

Because:
1) the broadcast infrastructure that provides signals to the
whole nation is in west London, the capital city
2) doing anything else would require a line booking which ties up a
circuit pointlessly and is more likely to go wrong
3) that's how it's always been done and there is no business reason to
change it

I know this has been discussed before, but the full absurdity of it only
hit me when I sat down to watch Look North tonight, expecting to find it on
BBC2 bacause of the tennis. But DTT Emley had the London News. So did
Freesat. Only analogue had Look North! There can't be many people watching
analogue now. It's barmy! Why not put the damned tennis on BBC2? At the end
of Look North they apologised to Belmont viewers for having to watch the
Leeds version. Do they apologise on BBC 1 at 6.30 for the lack of Look
North on the digi platforms? Why do they put London local news on
everywhere? Why don't they put a special national news programme on? Or why
not put Look North on everywhere?

Bill

This is not the first time this has happened. But now with no BBC2 analogue
in Cumbria I found it particularly insulting, to be informed I should switch
to BBC2 Analogue for my regional news.
As I understand it BBC2 can only carry national regions (London for England,
Scotland, Wales, N Ireland ?)

Good job Tyne Tees cover northeast and cumbria now !

That's right, it is not technically/financially possible to carry the English
regional programmes on BBC 2 Freeview or satellite.

I'm in no position to dispute this, but I am puzzled: how much more
expensive is digital TX compared to analogue?

Time was when interrupting the BBC-2 feed to Mendip was normal practice.
On one (Wimbledon, what else?) occasion, I even had two opts going
through the regional TV sound desk simultaneously (documentary playout
on BBC-2, Wimbledon-delayed news bulletin on BBC-1).

Do I assume that the TX disty for BBC-2 is now entirely via satellite?
It does seem rather more complex than it need be - will it be 'fixed'
after DSO?

I did a quick google on 'Television Distribution Network' but didn't find a link
to what I wanted which is a diagram of the above. Does anyone no of one please?

What difference would this make to most of the population?

It would have been just as irrelevant as the London news was to most
of the population, but there is quite a good case for it:

Look North (Newcastle) - half the area has undergone the first stage
of DSO very recently, so "switch to analogue" is ********.

Look North (Hull) - is the only one of the four regions which cannot
opt on BBC2 analogue which provides a full 30 minutes rather than part
of a bulletin

I assume in all this that Crystal Palace BBC2 can be opted out of
network.

To opt on BBC2 would have required duplicate kit in each regional
centre and a second high bitrate distribution rate feed of BBC2. It
would also have screwed up the statmuxing. It was felt that it was
better to ban opt outs on BBC2 and shift them all to BBC1.

As was demonstrated last night...

I would put money on the fact that would be a security risk. Network
Hijacking is common in Pirate Radio.
