Decided that we need to replace the kitchen (CRT 10" Goodmans) TV
when it next fails - which it does occassionally. We bought a Sharp Aquos 19" for the caravan a while back and have just come back from three weeks holiday where we enjoyed the picture quality. Argos are doing an Alba 16" at the moment at £99, as they are Wharfedale and Bush which are probably the same sets albeit the latter makes are sold as 15.4" Anyone got any experience of these and opinions on quality? I notice that M&S are doing an own-brand and John Lewis a Linsar both at £149 - and I wouldn't be surprised if these are the same sets as those at Argos as well. The only advantage is M&S give a two year guarantee and JLP five years, but if it is the same set is it worth paying 50% extra? Any worthwhile experience-based comments gratefully received. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

My aunt bought the Alba from Argos a couple of months ago and she's very happy with it. Unlike a lot of small LCD TVs it's 16:9 not 16:10 so the picture is the correct ratio for widescreen. It doesn't appear to switch automatically to 4:3 though, you can switch it from the remote. -- There is no God, so stop worrying and enjoy your life. |

We have had an Argos £99 TV in the kitchen for a month or so now and it's
fine. The only slight criticism I might make is the angle of view. In common with (I think) all LCD displays the angle of view vertically is quite restricted and having set it up sitting on a kitchen stool quite close to the screen I was dismayed to see how peculiar the picture looked when I stood up. It's no different to other LCDs or a laptop display and since my wife is quite a bit shorter than me she gets a good picture. I think it's a good buy. Tony "Woody" wrote in message ... The M&S TV got a categoric "DON'T BUY" from Which? Whether you agree with their findings is up to you, but it did seem to score badly on most counts. |

I have access to Which on line and they have a review of 253 TV's - and M&S are not even mentioned let alone listed. Do you read a different Which? -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

The M&S TV got a categoric "DON'T BUY" from Which? Whether you agree with their findings is up to you, but it did seem to score badly on most counts. Now you see that's interesting. I have access to Which on line and they have a review of 253 TV's - and M&S are not even mentioned let alone listed. Do you read a different Which? I suspect not. I have Which on line, and what's interesting is that they've removed all M&S TVs from the guide that I last read when I bought our Panny 19" LCD about 9 months ago. Not sure why, but there are no M&S TVs listed at all, and they certainly were listed. An archive search finds the following about their 32" set, IIRC similar was written about their smaller sets. It was enough to stop me from considering one, and I opted for the Panny which I find superb. Don't buy this M&S TV, says Which? M&S set has poor pictures - and sound 25 October 2007 Which? has named a Marks & Spencer (M&S) TV as one of the worst HDTVs we've tested this year. M&S has spent years building a brand name associated with quality products, so we were surprised to see it giving its name to such a badly performing TV. The sound quality of the 3210DVB, a 32-inch LCD set with built-in digital Freeview, is barely acceptable. But that's not as bad as its standard-definition pictures - described as 'hideous' and 'ugly' by our expert viewing panel. The jerky high-definition images manage the distinction of being the worst of any HDTV we've tested this year. Of all the TVs we've tested recently, it's also one of the most awkward to use, because of its unintuitive on-screen menus, an illogical remote and a long-winded EPG. Our first sample broke down and the replacement developed a fault, too. Our advice? Stick to the M&S food hall and don't buy this awful TV. |

"Which" can get obsessed with irrelevant parameters. For instance they refused to consider the Sony Trinitron 13" when it first came out because the back was plastic rather than fibre board. Bill |
