Whats so damn cool about ATSC is that it looks like the picture is made

What kind of zip cord do you use for your antenna wires?

and whats cooler still is how you hear the words before the
actors speak them.

Simple technical issue that was fixed for all the NYC stations more than
seven years ago.

The picture also stutters like a movie theater.

Here it is folks, write this one down, 35mm film projection "stutters".

Though HDTV has more resolution, the NTSC picture looks sharper because
broadcasters and cablecasters overcompress.

LOL.. I see, HDTV is less sharp than NTSC....

ATSC sucks way more the the old NTSC. We were screwed

A team of wild horses on meth couldn't drag us back to creaky, antiquated
anal-log TV, even if it did still exist.

Roger is not a troll. He is simply disgruntled about digital TV because
it isn't working for him. Anybody in his situation would have the same
attitude. Cut him a little slack.

Our analog channels gave way to only one digital channel. The digital
signals just don't carry the way the analog signals did.

If you want your old analog signal back, demand that the federal
government legalize analog TV transmission again. Contact the
president, vice president, U.S. Senators, and Representatives using
the links from http://www.rev.net/~aloe/tv#convert.

IMHO, if Congress repealed the law requiring digital conversion *today*,
fewer than half of stations would be *able* to resume analog broadcasts.

Many stations have dismantled their analog facilities. (quite a few
needed the space to build out their digital facilities to full power)
Others are operating in digital on their old analog frequencies, and in
many cases their interim digital frequencies cannot be reactivated.
(either because some other station is using them, or because they've
been sold for cellphone operation.) Some stations were leasing tower
space for analog antennas and have "un-renewed" those leases since they
won't need those antennas anymore.

Fewer than a quarter would be *willing* to resume analog broadcasts.

For quite a few stations, especially in this economy, there simply isn't
money in the budget for operating *both* a digital *and* an analog
transmitter. Especially if the analog is on UHF. Budgets already got
stretched to handle the additional four months of analog operation. (My
wild-a** guess is that something on the order of 100 people lost their
jobs because of the extension - stations needed the money from their
wages to pay for the additional four months of analog operation)

I think the thing the industry has learned from this transition is that
the audience was watching some REALLY BAD analog signals. (let that be
a lesson to radio!)

(I'm with "Zombie Elvis": around here (25 miles outside Nashville) many
mornings analog ABC was completely buried by skip from Texas, and analog
PBS wasn't much better. Nor was the CW. In digital, all three stations
are crystal-clear; the stations that were strong in analog look even
better; and I get at least a half-dozen new channels, at least three of
them well worth watching.

At Mom's place outside Milwaukee the situation is even better. With
rabbit ears in the basement she gets 35 channels including three with
continuous weather; two channels of "retro" TV; five PBSs; traffic maps,
alerts, and cameras; and a classical music radio station that's no
longer available via radio.)

I did, I said "us". See it, a few lines above? It's between the word "drag"
and "back".

Digital sucks ass.

Oh, well that settles it then.

You do seem to have some deep-seated hatred for anything digital.

Five years ago you wrote:

" . . . . . YOU may be living in a "digital age"

I did 25 years ago and have no intention of changing. (Heck, I still

make regular use of a set that I bought in 1963.) What anyone else

does is their own business, of course, but no DVD player or digital

television set will ever be found in my home. You need to be a little

careful when you make sweeping presumptions about what "we" are or

will be doing. Roger Blake" Aug. 2004

So, what's your general location, so some of us can offer you help with your
reception?

TJ,

Just how much slack should we give him? He refused help. There are
local groups in his area that can provide help but he refuses to take
advantage of it.

Digital is here to stay and people need to live with that. Those that
won't accept outside help are stuck with what they got (poor service).
Our groups is running into a lot of "Roger like" people. They call our
helpline and we give them good advice (even offering to come to their
home) but they refuse personal visits (???). Not much you can do to
really help them.

It seems tb still rampant on the channels I watch in the
Philadelphia PA USA area (3, 6, 12, 17, 35... and more)

Is there a single cause? Or could the stations have cleaned up
their acts and my own equipment be creating the problem anew

I can speak for Glenn Wright. He gave DTV a dirty sanchez.

You stop short of calling him names, for one thing. He has a right to
his opinion and to deal with digital TV the way he wants to. He also has
the right to speak his mind, as much as we do.

I can speak only for myself, but I do not treat someone with disrespect
simply because he disagrees with me. He would have to go farther than
that, like others that have graced our newsgroups with their presence in
the past. Sure, Roger disagrees, but I don't remember him being
disrespectful about it unless attacked.

TJ, you haven't spent any time on rec.arts.tv. Roger was a supreme troll
there for many years. He's been doing the "crotchety old luddite" routine
forever.
