With three days to go before BBC2 dies forever, I am finally getting
little old ladies coming up to me to give me advice on going Digital. The most cogent was the 84 year old, who told me she couldn't understand what all the fuss was about, all she was going to do was to retune her two new TV sets when the 'digital' came on-line. She tells me that she has the instruction booklet by her armchair. Ah! how the times have changed.... R. www.bassenthwaite.org.uk |

Well, for every one who is prepared there are probably two who have said,
Oh, I'll do that tomorrow, and now tomorrow is here they still have not done it... Is something important happening? Yes, all the On / ITV Digital boxes and TV's stop working ! (well the ones that don't cope with 8k carriers anyway) |

. .. With three days to go before BBC2 dies forever, I am finally getting little old ladies coming up to me to give me advice on going Digital. Seeing as one such lady will be my mum, and I need to explain what's going on can someone clarify the following for me. (I should explain I've had freeview where we are for years so haven't been following DSO closely). I can see two statements for the transmitter she receives TV from: 24th June: BBC2 analogue is switched off. You will need to re-tune your digital equipment to pick up the available channels. 22nd July: The remaining analogue channels are switched off. You will need to re-tune your digital equipment again to pick up all available digital channels. Does this mean all digital channels (from the reduced selection they'll ultimately get) will broadcast on the 24th (perhaps at a lower power) or just BBC2? In which case all she needs to do on the 24th in plug in her new digibox and forget about the analogue stuff? Or will it be a big faff of having to deal with some channels on analogue for a month and some on digital before they're all finally available on digital? Cheers |

No, on June 24th at Caldbeck itself the following happens:- 1: BBC 2 analogue will vanish 2: The present low power version of the BBC Mux will vanish. 3: The new high power version of the BBC mux on a new frequency (carrying BBC 1, 2, 3, 4, N24) will appear called PSB 1. At all of Caldbeck's mainland relays (excluding Whitehaven, that has already DSO'd in 2007), Steps 1 and 3 will apply. All digital boxes must be rescanned at this point. On July 22 at Caldbeck itself the following happens: 1: BBC 1, ITV, C4 and C5 analogue at Caldbeck will vanish 2: The present five low power muxes will vanish. 3: These five muxes will appear (on different frequencies) at high power. At all of Caldbeck's mainland relays (excluding Whitehaven, that has already DSO'd in 2007), Step 1 will apply (excl C5), and Mux 2 and B will appear for the first time, (renamed PSB 2 and 3) All digital boxes must be rescanned at this point. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

Excellent description, cheers. At least it means she can switch over to the digibox straight away and forget about the analogue stuff, as they only get channels 1-4 there anyway (Glenluce transmitter). Then a rescan a month later will open up a bunch of other stuff too. |

From June 24th all she will be able to receive on her Digital box will be:- BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3, BBC 4, BBC News Ch, CBBC and CBeebies -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |
