true..

You can kill someone and go to jail for 6 months..

You can kill someone on the road and get no penalty at all

If you get fired you will spend 9 months looking for a job and have no
income..

That's the calculation that transport companies force upon their drivers

Might be so with *true* bikers - but not so for most of those driving

etc riders or kids with their first scooter round your way?

John Majors Gov was going to ban L Plate riders from Pizza deliveries,
until they realised pizzerias would then have to pay real money for
qualified
riders, and transplant surgeons would get even less organs to transplant

Victorians only sent kids up chimneys, we send them out on busy roads
to do a professional riding job, unqualified.

The local 'traffic wardens' round here have spotters riding round on
scooters - every one with L plates. Place I sometimes work for say they
can't insure learner drivers on their company vehicles - so wonder how
they do? If you think of it someone doing this job *can't* be giving their
full attention to driving - so at least should be fully qualified?

I know that, but it's the uswe fo the word "chassis" that makes me wonder
how up-to-date the DfT are.

IIRC, it seems to be used to describe the underpinnings these days - and
the word 'separate' added for things like Triumph Heralds. ;-)

But, at the end of the day, the maximum permitted speed limit is still

True, but if all 3 lanes are doing 80 (and there is a lot of traffic)
then you have reason to doubt your speed tacho.

Most cars speedos still over-read by up to 10% - which is a nonsense with
modern pulse counting designs. 1% would be a more reasonable spec.

BMW speedos are consistently poor - perhaps that's why most of their
drivers ignore it.

Maybe because i'm middle aged the plod generally leave me alone?
But i've been appalled at what least around here seems to be
systematic harassment of teenagers, having witnessed plod on several
occasions giving just about any group of 3 or more teenagers for no
apparent reason, questioning with body searching and even searching
of their shoes (maybe they think they are potential shoe bombers?)

Only my own cowardliness has stopped me from intervening,
knowing if i had i'd get more of the same.

An Australian woman friend has told me she is appalled at how British
police now behave towards the public and wouldn't occur back in Oz,
that's saying something with the reputation Australian police for being
hard and uncompromising

Seems their reputations have now reversed ;-(

Ah, but isn't this part of the UK spec that the manufacturers have to
comply with?
In my experience, comparing a speedo to a GPS device, speedos in this
country over-read, but in cars that I have rented in the USA, they
seem to be accurate.

Received wisdom suggests that this is a euro law and that some manufacturers
will deliberately design plus ten percent in to ensure that they stay on the
right side of the law (up to plus 10% OK but minus anything very definitely
NOT).

It is common knowledge amongst owners that my car (a Toyota Prius) reads
exactly 10% over at all speeds up to the max. I know this and it's very
easy to just add 10% to the displayed speed knowing that I am still within
the law. And before you say "how do I know it is" I've tested it through
those smiley radar thingies that tell you how fast you are going and also
using a GPS and I've yet to be photographed by a GATSO when I pass one at
33, 44, 55, 66 and/or 77 mph displayed (as appropriate).

No - the spec is only that they can't under-read. And given that as tyres
wear down the over-read gets greater, there's just no excuse. Of course it
means they get serviced early and add to the profits. As well as for bar
room betting about top speed...
