Default Set top boxes with audio description.

OK I know one can ask the RNIB, but they only seem to be interested in
flogging what they stock..Is there a difinitve list of set top boxes and
their features? Many people drop into Currys or wherever and ask the
completely valid question..
My mother has bad eyesight, which of these boxes has adio description built
in?j Duh?

Top post for Brian ...

Interestingly there is a very cheap one at Argos - Argos Value LPDV205B
order code 532/1849 £14.59 - you need to use the visual menu to turn AD
on/off and the remote control does not alter the volume of the AD just turns
up and down the normal audio (but mute does turn all sound off) Also it does
not duck the normal audio for the AD so sometimes music can drown out the
AD. that said its an OK box picture and sound wise, the output is only via
scart and no leads at all are supplied with the box. Don't expect to put
anything on top of the box - it's nicely curved in all directions.
The Argos website makes no mention of the AD function so make it a condition
of sale that it works as they do say a different model may be supplied.

The RNIB badged ones are basically Tvonics with (on one at least) an extra
button on the box itself, in common with the Tvonics own ones they have an
AD on/off button on the remote, and a beep if the channel you switch to is
sending AD and also does duck the normal sound when AD speaks, however
glitches in the control track can duck the sound when there is no AD. The
MFRs are very small, almost matchbox size.
Tvonics MFR300 £40 equal to RNIB MFR300 £58 UHF only
Tvonics MDR250 £45 sort of equal to RNIB MDR300 £67 UHF and 2 scarts

These are the only ones I know of apart from complete TVs like Sony and
Panasonic

Thanks, did not know about the Argos one. I remember talking to Goodmans
about something similar, and they quite rightly said the feature was not
fully implimented, but I do not think their current models even offer it.

Yes, the ITV control track glitches are a nightmare on my Netgem.
