Oh in which case I own several devices like that, however on those the
button is simply marked ON/OFF!

Yes, I've got one of those (or perhaps an earlier model) and also an
HXD560 of a similar vintage to your mother's. I agree that they're both
generally reliable and fairly functional pieces of kit.

They're not perfect -- they have some annoying idiosyncrasies -- and my
710 developed a habit of crashing but that's fixed now (by turning off
the firmware update function (!) which is no hardship as Sony apparently
don't trust the broadcasters to transmit any updates correctly anyway).

The newer 560, in particular, is great for recording. It doesn't miss
the beginnings and ends of broadcasts as often as the older 710, and the
"series timer" picks up double-bills, etc., without any extra
instruction (which is just as well, as I tend to program the box and
then forget about it). It's VERY slow to start up from standby, though,
and if there's a DVD in the drive it won't respond to the remote until
it's read/loaded the DVD index ... which is damned annoying if all you
wanted to do was eject the DVD!

Father-in-Law bought a Samsung, and after taking it back to the shop for
three repairs and two replacements he eventually swapped it for a
Panasonic, which he likes. I might recommend a Panny nowadays, but back
when I got my Sony they were lacking in features and had no support for
DVD+ formats.

The trouble with Humax and Toppy boxes is that they don't have DVD
drives and don't support high-speed copying between DVD and HDD. That
doesn't matter to some people, but I use it a lot (copying recordings
from the HDD so that I can take them with me on DVD if I'm away from
home for a few days).
