Hi
We have a philips tv and sky+ hd. We keep getting black screen for couple
of seconds. Philips say sky are aware of problems with their tv and sky's
new upgraded boxes.
Sky have decided to change the box to a Thompson ( next Thurs ) and have
said this has got RGB connections and they would connect to the tv through
these. Is it possible to get HD through RGB or does it have to go through a
HDMI cable.
Someone at Philips suggested it wasn't possible but would not commit
themselves and said if Sky had found a way then they must be able to. I am
not too sure they aren't just fobbing me off, maybe someone can please
enlighten me on this.
Regards
Pete

There are many ways to move video around. RGB analog is very good,
analog component is very good. DVI and its close cousin HDMI are
nearly identical quality wise but can be noticeably better under
certain condidtions A large majority of folks won't detect the
difference but some will. IF you have the option of DVI/HDMI, it's
better but don't fret about it.

I'm fairly certain that the RGB connection in the SCART input of your
Philips TV would not sync to a signal with HD timings (though I never
tried).

My guess would be that the person you talked to meant Component Video
(YPbPr). The colours of the 3 connectors are Red Green and Blue, but
the signal is not "RGB". If your current box lacks a YPbPr (Component)
output, that would be the answer.

A VGA connection ("PC-connection") is sometimes also called RGB and
can in principle work with resolutions that quailfy as "HD".
The problem with such a connection is that the standard set of
resolutions and timings that these inferfaces work with does not make
it a perfect match for the variants of TV and video. Especially not in
Europe, where we mostly use video based on 50Hz.
VGA inputs in TV:s are usually not compatible with 50Hz but 60 or 75.
That affects the motion handling.
