Whats wrong with using your own VPN from a compatible router back home?
DG834G for example?

I rather suspect that the original posting was a well crafted piece
of SPAM, so you are not going to get an answer to your question,
since the whole point of the VPN service being advertised is to
get you to pay up.

Yes. There are a couple of services.

The official ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/watchlive/

The not so official ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zattoo (owners hiding in Michigan / Zurich)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TVCatchup (owners hiding in Republic of
Mauritius)

Without paying?

Quite. Superb opportunity for additional funding of the broadcasting
industry missed. :-(

My router (Zyxel) has a VPN built in, but I can find no information on
how to set it up. I have a vague idea you need certs at both ends and
the right type of VPN client. How do you generate them etc. what type
of client do you need? Any pointers?

I already wanted to do this for my father in law and also for while I am
on business. Currently I use Nebula streaming, but unfortunatley the
last hotel I visited in Czech Republic couldn't (wouldn't) support the
128kbs minimum over wireless. Strangley they had a paid for cable
version also available, both advertised 'High speed internet access', I
didn't purchase the paid for service as obviously they don't know the
meaning of 'High speed'.
