To be pedantic, ABC did lose their Northern weekend and Midlands weekend
franchises, and ATV did lose their Greater London weekend franchise.

To compensate for these losses, ABC gained a controlling interest in
the Greater London weekday franchise, and ATV gained a full week
Midlands franchise.

Good point, well made ;-)

Sorry, just mourning the old days of choices of fun itv regions and

It was fun I suppose, but how many people actually had a choice of
ITV region ?

here in oxfordshire where we got central,i used to get a really fuzzy
TVS if i pointed my set top aerial in the right direction - it made me
feel a rebel, watching the non official ITV for my region,.
the latenight programming was often different so i'd set the video
each night to record something nice for the next day - guess that's
how you turn mental when you only have 4 channels to choose from.

In N Northumberland (5 and 8 from Pontop Pike and Burnhope, it was
Grampian on Ch9, from Meldrum ('off the back of the beam').

Not from Meldrum, but Durris I suspect. To my certain knowledge Meldrum
transmitted on Band 1 (can't remember which channel now) up to the end
of this service, and on Band 2 with these services continuing.

From looking at the 'stuff' on the top of the mast, it now seems as if
DAB is transmitted also. I cannot be bothered to check to confirm - no
interest in DAB.

This was a long way away, but quite a lot of the path was over the sea.
You only got reception in the summer, and only when there was a
temperature inversion, which caused tropospheric ducting.

Over the hill from me, it was there was no chance of Ch8, and all Band
3 aerials pointed north towards Meldrum.

See above.

There, 'cracking good pictures' were often received (or nothing at all)
- far better than my consistent Ch 8 signals (30uV on a 10-el aerial, I
believe I once measured).

Here, in S Bucks (a Crystal Palace area), I can get Hannington (for
what was Southern ITV, on Ch42. It used to be around 200uV on a
10-element in the loft, but there's a lot of co-channel these days.
With a decent preamp, I can actually get the digitals, but here's so
little regional variation these days that it's not worth bothering.

Well, to be technically correct the station that covers all (OK 90%) of
Harrogate is Bilsdale which is TT land. The fact that most of the south
and east of the town can get Emley is just good luck.Much of the centre
and N/NW of the town is behind the hill.

Having said that, York, which is 18 miles east, is officially covered by
Emley as the Wolds get in the way of Bilsdale for most of the area. Same
goes for the Scarborough relay, but if you live in Malton which is on the
north-facing slope of the southern Wolds you have little or no option but
Bilsdale unless you live high up.

I thought that much of York city received a much better Bilsdale signal than
EM, which was always contentious given the Tyne Tees content?

The annoying thing about all of this is that $ky still insist on you
watching the programmes of the ORIGINAL franchisees for your area.

They make it awkward, but not impossible. At least you can store
the regons of your choice in a digibox as "other channels".

Different matter if you want to record them on Sky+ though.

No this is wrong. Almost everywhere in York has clear line-of-sight to
Bilsdale. Obviously there are a few places with local obstructions (big
buildings in the city centre, etc). In general the field strength from
Bilsdale far exceeds that from Emley.

There are, however, places much closer than York to Bilsdale that have to
use Emley. Near the foot of the moors, along the A170, there are places only
a few miles from Bilsdale that can't receive it. Many of these places are
actually quite high up and have near line-of-sight to Emley!

Well, that's TWO abbreviations for what must have been the ITV
contractor with the longest name.

Independent Television for South Wales and the West of England, Limited.

Reigate.

Surely Reigate was one of the relays installed for the start of BBC2
from CP - when it was the only main Tx in existence?
