The annoying thing about all of this is that $ky still insist on you
watching the programmes of the ORIGINAL franchisees for your area.

We are in Harrogate, in Yorkshire, 16 miles north of Yorkshire TV in
Leeds, but $ky insist

Why do you think it's Sky insisting on this and not ITV?

Sorry, just mourning the old days of choices of fun itv regions

It was fun I suppose, but how many people actually had a choice of
ITV
region ?

I did. Even for 405!

I'll open the bidding at three. London, Midlands, Southern.

(No cheating, satellite reception doesn't count !)

I'll raise you
Granada and Yorkshire, visiting at the M.i.L's Anglia and London

Three will be most for regular reception on UHF.

It was worked out by someone many years ago that the area which
can regularly receive five regions was around the Mendip hills.
So that will be HTV Wales, HTV West, Southern, Westward and ATV.

But this would have been in VHF days.

Makes me wonder how many my pal who is on a hill near
Stranraer could get if he had an extra aerial already
he has RTE and Border I can't remember the third mainland
station but he's about 35 mls from Belfast and the digital
for Workington is across the Solway come to that the IOM
isnt that far away .

Wasn't Peterboro the best place in the 405 days Charles?

rubbish from Newcastle 100 miles away. Thankfully dear old Auntie is a
little more practical and lets us watch Look North Leeds.

Is there any wonder ITV have got no viewers???

I wonder who decides, if you had Freesat you would get YTV instead of Tyne
Tees.

So why not try pointing your satellite dish at 19,2 East and watch
the Drittes Fernsehprogramm regional stations?

Better quality programs than ITV and no programs are interrupted by
commercials.

No, Westward was a seperate company that served Cornwall. IIRC they lost
their Franchise in the sixties.

Westward was the predecessor to TSW, who were the predecessor to Westcountry.

Westward lost their franchise to TSW in Jan 1982, TSW to Westcountry in Jan 1993.

All three companies used UHF main stations Redruth, Caradon Hill, Huntshaw
Cross, Stockland Hill, and Beacon Hill. The franchise area was all of Cornwall
and Devon, plus parts of Somerset and Dorset.

Last month the Westcountry and HTV West regions were merged, though AIUI there
is still an opt out within the main 6pm news programme for the old
'Westcountry' region.
However, Westcountry did have opt outs from Redruth, Huntshaw,
Stockland/Beacon, and Caradon for most of their existence.

South West England franchise/licence holders

April 1961 - December 1981 Westward Television

January 1982 - December 1992 Television South West

January 1993 - November 2008 Westcountry Television

November 2008 - present ITV Broadcasting Limited

The South West England licence region covers the counties of Devon, Cornwall,
plus adjacent parts of Somerset and Hampshire.

The South West England licence region has now been merged with the West of
England licence region, and is licenced to ITV Broadcasting Limited.

Thanks for the info, for some reason I had the idea that Westwood lost their
franchise at the same time as ABC and ATV.

I think you might have been thinking of TWW, Televison West and Wales, who
were replaced in 1968 by HTV ?
