For example, YesTERDAY is more affirmative, while yesTERDAy is more proclamational with its implied fanfare. Many years ago when vcrs were still a novelty, YTV ran a some trailers that had the name of the day of the week rapidly zooming out of the screen. What fun we had trying to pause the tape at exactly the right moment half way through the saTURDay one. The BBC's 'Tonight' titles (the '70s late-night one, not the '60s Fyfe Robertson teatime one, or the unwatchable Trever Macdonut version) had something similar. The letters imploded inwards on themselves until only TIT was visible, usually followed by a shot of Austin Mitchell. -- Alan Pemberton Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England To e-mail me directly, please visit http://www.pembers.freeserve.co.uk/index.html#Mail-me Heck Alan, you really are old aren't you? When I was young I wondered why the internationally known pop-star who sang "The Locomotion" would name herself after a small place near Bolton ;-) Ahh, childhood misapprehensions. In infant assembly we sung 'There is a green hill far away.' The headmistress had the absurd name of Miss Greenhouse and I assumed we were singing a song that would somehow magically make her 'far away' -- which I saw as being a common good. Later we should have chanted "Hallowed be thy name . . " but since the Prime Minister was Harold MacMillan we always said "Harold be thy name . . ". It seemed reasonable to pray to such an important man. (Many years after this I was to work for Mr MacMillan's nephew, who told me amusing stories about him. In return I told him how we would pray to his uncle, which bemused him.) In the summer holidays following the second year of infant school I was apprehensive about the junior school. The boy next door, Tommy Scholey, was two years older and thus was a hardened inmate of the Juniors. He was also a bit of a joker. He and I walked down the road to look at the Junior school. "You see that place up there," said Tommy, pointing to the tank room, which looked like a shed on the flat roof, "That's the caning room." Seeing my look of alarm he continued gleefully, "That's where they cane you." I'd heard rumours that it was possible to get the cane in the juniors, so my fear was immense and uncontrollable. When the first day of term came my feet were leaden indeed. Bill |

H'es usually quite entertaining these days and being a celebrated member of the 'Awkward Squad' in the Westminster village he says what he thinks and often speaks some good sense. Doesn't stop me sympathising with Alan though if he had to be watched every night! -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |
