According to the 37LZD85 manual, the standby consumption is 0.3 w
(without monitor out recording). I have a wattmeter attached to the TV,
and according to that, the standby current is either 0.07A (16.1 w) or
0.16 A (36.8 w). There is no recording taking place or programmed to do
so, so it should be 0.3 w.

Why does the standby current vary?

If it's anything like a Sony LCD TV, then it's because for a couple of
minutes after being put into standby, it scans the band looking for any
new or changed services. Wait a while, and you should see it drop to
0.3 w.

Looking at the wattmeter first thing in the morning after the set has been
off for many hours still shows it using 0.07A.

When first coming out of standby it changes from 0.07A to 0.16A for a few
seconds before coming on fully at around 0.7A. I will look at the setup
menu to see if there is anything worth changing there to reduce the
standby consumption. I wonder what will happen if I turn off "Auto
Update Search in Standby" - it must be using more power to run the update
search all the time.

Just tried turning off auto update. No difference. Maybe I'll ask
Panasonic.

Unfortunately this basically just reproduces Panasonic's press
releases. These are intended to make each range sound wonderful, by
telling you some of the features they have. What I really want is
something that says "the X range is like the Y range but cheaper
because it doesn't have Z", but they'll never tell what a range
*doesn't* have.

And if it does can you believe them?

Just a question. Why are you not quoting your wattmeter's wattage
reading? All you can say for certain, assuming you trust that 0.07A
reading, is that you've calculated a 16.1VA figure from a voltage of
230. This does not preclude the wattage actually being 0.3W

A few of these "charity bags" are commercial companies - some legit ones
working on behalf, and the others are shady grifters propping up the
black economy ...

A couple of genuine charities still leave bags (well, the odd one I've
actually looked at) but the lower life forms just leave leaflets these
days (and have done for ages). One we got recently was (almost) in
English and was printed double sided. On the back they'd put a wonderful
bit about how green they were by not leaving bags ...!

They go straight into the recycling but, on the odd occasion that we
check, we've often had seven in a week ...!

.... There can't be a single item of unwanted clothing for miles - but
still the pesky flyers keep coming!

Just one a week? You must live in a utopian paradise. I get a minimum
of three. But they are cheaper than black bin liners, so they do serve
a useful function.

For some reason on standby the wattage figure varies from second to second
from about 4 - 30 watts, but if I switch the display to show current the
reading is steady. I would assume that the set has a SMPS, and I guess this
would have an impact on the displayed readings, although the meter
accurately shows consumption at around 0.5 - 0.7A (depending on the picture)
when the set is on.

FWIW, the wattmeter (a Tchibo energy meter) has given reliable readings for
several years with a number of devices. According to the tech specs, the
"Measurement range displayed" is 0.02A. I have an old Panasonic DVD
recorder with a SMPS, but unfortunately the manual does not give a standby
consumption figure with which I could test and perhaps compare to the TV.

Bugger. Strange as it may seem, I never thought of that. They never get
collected so I end up throwing them away!
