While Blu-ray recorders have been available in Japan for years, here in the US
it's Blu-ray's third year and there's no sight of one. The reasons are obviously not technological and instead limited by DRM and other factors, but we think one of those is that the market might be too small. So we're asking you since we know you're the early adopter type; Would you buy a Blu-ray recorder if you could? http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/21...-if-you-could/ -- Certified SPAM-free sig |

No. I don't have a video source that needs it. I can record OTA HDTV on a
DVR just fine. |

I'd be more inclined however to purchase a blue ray burner for my computer first as my needs for portable data archiving far exceed my needs for recording video. |

Yep, a Blu-ray drive in the HTPC could be the player and archive drive. We keep seeing them in the Fry's ad, BD player only $100, recorder low 200s. Given the cost of blanks, it's still ceaper to use USB drives for bulk storage - 1 TB $100 My main concern is the DRM garbage and my older DLP set with DVI but no HDMI. Can I play a BD disc or will it say 'sorry, you need to replace the computer and TV' ? G² |

... I would ONLY buy a Blue ray unit if it had streaming video capability as well such as some of the Samsung models do That way I could stream from Netflix and also watch on disk too an Ethernet port would be ice as well The Ethernet port is part of the Profile 2.0 Specs (BD LIVE) not what I call the Beta Blu-Ray players Profile 1.0 and 1.1. Basically a 2.0 BD LIVE player puts Blu-Ray on Par to what HD DVD was capable of doing on Day 1 with the very first Player. A finished Standard. I have BOTH and still like HD DVD better. On the plus side, I've be getting another top of the line Toshiba HD-A35 HD DVD player Friday for cheap along with a bunch of HD DVD movies. Having your Blu-Ray player streaming Netflix movies seems like you don't have a whole lot of faith in Blu-Ray. The only reason I got my Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray player was because at the time it was selling for $199 and it was a Profile 2.0 BD LIVE player. I wasn't going to buy one until those 2 things happened. A Full 2.0 Blu-Ray player for under $200. Of course prices have gone back up. I also stream Netflix, but use my Xbox 360 to do that which works great. Also use it to stream my Music from the PC or HD TV programs I've recorded using Media Center, and stream content from Youtube, Hulu, CBS, etc if I want to. To me it just seems silly for a Blu-Ray player to stream Netflix!!! Having a TV with Netflix support Built-In on the other hand is a great Idea and is starting to be done. If I could buy a small HDTV for the bedroom with Netflix support, hell just plug in a Ethernet connection and I'd be fine. |
