Default Sky on Freesat?

The Radio Times website lists Sky 1 on Freesat ch. 121, and Sky Sports 1
on Freesat 511. Can a Freesat box pick up these channels? Is a
subscription needed?

Simon.

121 is the Virgin Media channel for Sky1!!! Something has gone wrong with
the RT listings!

A Freesat box cannot pick up either channel as they are subscription
(pay TV) channels.

I've just set up a new account on the Radio Times website and it does
*not* list either Sky 1 or Sky Sports 1 as Freesat channels.

However, if you are making use of an existing account with the RT
website and had previously selected Sky 1 and/or Sky Sports 1 or
indeed any other non-Freesat channels to be in your listings, then
going to the "Add/remove TV channels" page and selecting "Freesat" as
your "TV service provider" will *not* remove the non-Freesat channels
from the list of channels that appear in your personalised listings
(on the right under "Your listings channels").

You can either remove the channels you don't get on Freesat one by
one, or you could remove them all and start afresh by selecting
Freesat as your "TV service provider" and then adding the channels you
want to see on your personalised listings. (Note there's no 'remove
all' option so you'd need to click the box next to each individual
channel to remove it.)

Well strictly speaking, a Freesat box can "receive" the signals for these
stations, but it is unable to decrypyt the video/audio parts of the
transmission.

Hopefully I am not in error in thinking that the sequence is

DVB signal -- LNB downconversion - tuner reception --
-- decryption (NDS etc) -- decoding (MPEG2 or MPEG4) -- audio/video

If this is wrong, then corrections please.

Without an account, the TV guide gives a selection of channels.
I noticed that the cricket was being shown on Sky Sports 1, and clicked
on the channel name. This gave me...

"Extract TS" (don't know if this has a name) and "demultiplex" added

Pressing 121 gives Ch4+1, 511 doesn't attempt to even change channel.

Aha, I see - and likewise when you click on Sky 1 the RT website says
it can be found on Freesat channel 121, the same as the Virgin Media
channel. The Radtio Times website is just plain wrong here, they've
evidently somehow managed to copy the channel numbers over from those
used on the Virgin Media cable EPG. No Premiership and Jack Bauer etc
for free I'm afraid!
