Default ATSC/QAM tuner means HD?

Does the fact that a TV set comes with that type of tuner mean that
its capable of showing HD? The reason I am asking is ...I saw an ad
for a sansui 19" Digital TV for $149. Now, on that same ad, there were
others advertised as 19" LCD TV and 19" LCD HDTV...and the later two
say ATSC/NTSC tuner and yet the last one does say HD, but not the
others. This is confusing. I was under the impression that any TV that
has ATSC tuner gives you HD...that is with an OTA or indoor antenna's.

An ATSC tuner may tune an hd signal, but that
doesn't mean the television can display it.

Sansui? What the hell is that? Sounds like fish bait.

Well, what is missing from it to be able to get HD then? I bought
awhile back a monitor with the atsc and pc and I do get hd with my
antenna..so be more specific if you can.

The converter boxes also receive HD but convert to standard defintion
so that the old TV can display it. The text on the screen might _say_
HD but the picture is certainly not HD. At $150 I wouldn't expect more
than a standard def display. The manual should tell you the native
display resolution. 640x480 is standard def.

You have to look at the specs and see what the native resoultion is.
An ATSC over the air tuner can get digital signals including HD, but
if your TV is not HD, then you will just be watching a standard def
digital signal.
QAM tuner means it can get unencrypted cable channels without a set
top box. Usually these are the major networks HD channels plus any
other digital channels.

An ATSC tuner means your TV can receive OTA digital signals. The QAM
allows you to receive digital signals by a cable company. That said
the TV must be an HDTV to display HD. If the Sansui TV to which you
refer is the DTV1900 it's a CRT(tube) TV with a 4:3 aspect. On it HDTV
will either be letter boxed or have its edges cut off but it won't
display as HD.

No, an ATSC/QAM tuner only means that the TV can receive digital signals
(all HD signals are digital but not all digital signals are HD). The
display determines if the TV can display digital. Look for 720p or
1080i in the ad. Those displays will allow you to view the channels in HD.

OOPS! I should have said "the display determines if the TV can display HD".

Well, it the answer is that atsc does not guarantee hd, just what is
in a tv that makes it hd?
