My 18 month old Westinghouse 46"1080p HDTV suddenly developed green
artifacts and was diagnosed as having a "bad panel", too expensive to
repair! A firmware update failed. Now that the shock has worn off
(and I will stick to name brands in the future) , is there some use
for such a big black, flat elephant? It wont turn on. Should I donate
it to Sherrif Joe for one of his sting operations?

remove the screen part and then stand behind the tv acting.
tell people you have a 3d television and charge 5 dollars admission per
person.

So Westinghouse, that's been around probably twice as long as any of the
other so called name brands isn't a name brand. I also wonder why you
think it would cost less to fix another brand with the same problem. All
TV's will fail eventually. The brand really doesn't matter much except
what you pay for it up front. You can probably buy two 1080p Westinghouse
sets for less than a single of the so called premium sets. If you were
concerned about failure, you should have gotten an extended warranty, no
matter what brand you bought.

The consumer electronics company is relatively new; it just licenses the name.

Maybe there is hope, I notice that EBAY has Westinghouse main circuit
boards avaliable for one hundred bucks. Maybe if I just replaced a
board or two, I could get it working again.

You're probably going to need more info than this to figure out what
circuit board to buy and install.

My plan is to lay down the tv on a bed and take it apart, hopefully
identifing the part numbers of the system board and the video board.
Then order replacement boards
and hope for the best.

If you have a bad panel, I take that to mean the actual LCD panel. You'd
have to replace the LCD panel. Might want to have the person that
diagnosed it give you a more definitive answer to this before you start
wasting money on electronic boards.

Out of curiosity. What does a new one cost and what does your's cost
to fix?
