Hi

I'm starting to look for a 32 or 37 inch LCD TV (haven't decided on size
yet).

Is there anywhere that I can find comments on the different makes
themselves before trying to compare actual models?

I watch mainly documentaries, films, drama, and occasionally hook up my
laptop to show powerpoint slideshows to customers in my home.

Thanks

Last year Panasonic were given an award by Which? magazine for
Best Audio Visual Brand and also a special Heritage Award for
achieving the most Which? Best Buy recommendations. And their
TVs are always highly rated by those in the know.

Well, there you go! How to confuse a beginner - this seems to contradict all
the previous responses about not being able to go with a brand name as such!

Except that, in the 26" TVs I've been looking at, it seems the new Panasonic
TX26LXD80 is actually worse than the preceding TX26LXD70 which has now been
withdrawn. It doesn't have 100Hz technology for example and may well
therefore suffer from motion smear. I've been holding back for that reason.

Does anyone know of a reliable review of 26" TVs or have any particular
recommendations?

After a not-very-thorough attempt to research all the options - made
impossible by the shear number of model variations which each
manufacturer produces, with little or no clear information on their
websites about what those differences mean - I bought a Sony
KDL26S3000 at Richer Sounds. It's my first flat-panel tv, so I can't
compare it with others, but it suits me fine for my use.

Thanks, Alan. I remembered you had posted this before, but I couldn't
find it (didn't look hard enough) after I'd bought the new Sony. I've
already neutralised some of the questionable settings, and I think any
occasional dissatisfaction I may have with the picture is due to
vagaries in production/transmission, but I'll follow your guide to
make sure.

Actually, I broadly agree about Panasonic being good, but does anyone
remember the smaller TV chassis which Panasonic bought in and branded
as Panasonic some years ago (could have been Daewoo??)
And the Panasonic widescreen CRT sets which had a tremendously high,
premature tube failure rate due to a large batch of faulty tubes from
Philips. (These were used in a great many other brands of set also).
Also, after many years of excellent and long-lasting Panasonic VCRs,
the later models failed very regularly and predictably with faulty
loading mechanism drives.
Similar problems occur with specific models of most brands.
You can't generalise.

I bought a Panasonic LCD recently for a relative.
Despite all the recommendations, it failed inside a
week. Hopefully the replacement will last without
needing another claim on the warranty.
