One of the first DVD's I purchased (I guess about 12 years ago) was Blade
Runner - "The Directors Cut" Last night I watched it (or tried to) but gave up after 20 minutes because of the atrocious image quality. The first time I have tried to watch it on a non-CRT TV. Both grainy and low resolution. I am certain this must be by far the "worst" DVD I have quality-wise. I recall EXACTLY the same feeling as when I purchased my DVD player. VHS movies became unwatchable I suppose "what goes around comes around", Anyhow... having established Blade Runner is available on Blu Ray, I guess I have no alternative but to "buy in"....and as soon as possible. I feel an irrational compulsion to do this. Question: How the heck to I justify Blu Ray to 'er indoors? Will simply purchasing Mamma Mia! be sufficient? Any other recommendations? D |

Are you sure it's the DVD that's low quality, and not the upscaling to fit your TV? You could try playing it through a PS/3 instead. Plays DVDs, it's a games console for the kids - and it just happens to play blu-ray too... Andy |

D Yes, buy a Sony PS3. It is not only an excellent blu-ray player but also an excellent media centre to play all your music, picture slide shows etc. At about £300 it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. (Incidentally it also plays games!) |

Andy Yup, I guess some of the the manufacturers of the very first generation DVD's used first generation film scanning technology to digitize. Other newer DVD's are fine. Roll on Boxng Day sales. D In mitigation (which I'm sure you don't want) - the BR C DVD transfer was awful and isn't indicative of how most DVDs should look. Having said that the HD version of it (I actually have the HD VD copy) is beautiful and is the last one I will ever buy (off the top of my head I have bought 7 versions of this bloody film). |

Is it really that good? Looks like I might need to upgrade sooner rather than later. Now that a PS3 isn't the cheapest way to own one I might try and pick one up in the new year. |

Ouch. Is it really that good? Yes. I think it's breathtaking. Worth buying to see the Final Cut which IMHO is the best version of the film, with a superb transfer, and effects tidied up, and in HD it's superb. The detail visible in the city flypasts etc has to be seen to be believed! Review he http://www.thedigitalbits.com/review...lallver01.html PS. Keep your old DVD copy (and I agree that wasn't typical of DVD, that region 2 transfer was awful) for comparisons later! May I add that the Vangelis soundtrack sounds excellent in lossless surround :-) Marky P. |
