What usually happens is people base this on things they have a real
interest in - cameras, Hi-Fi, cars etc. And forget no two 'experts' will
agree about which is best anyway for these.

I've used Which for domestic appliances and never been disappointed. A
prime example was an upright 'Hoover'. I bought the recommendation - a
Panasonic - when Dysons had just come out and were all the rage. It's
never failed while the local tip is full of dead Dysons...

I remember when PIL tubes came along - with poorer resolution and colour
than the previous delta gun types...

I was referring to overall -- reliability--.

Yes PIL tubes and red phosphors did leave a bit to be desired;!..

There are a coupls of thinsg that which occasioanlly gets right- their
paint tests, and some domestic appliance tests. - the reliability info
is not bad, although generally based on small sample sizes.

For a lot of other info they are pretty poor, and getting a lot worse
now that they've adopted a popular magazine type format where a lot of
products get a mention without any decent review. I gave up on which
when they gave a mnention to a B&Q barbecue unit, with built in mp3
speakers and said it would be useful... the basic idea just strikes me
as crap gimmick.

cheers

you must remember that Which? was in no small way responsible for the
demise of the UK tv set industry when it stated that Japanese sets were far
more reliable than UK ones. This resulted in virtualy no sales for GEC

I think you are overestimating the circulation and influence of Which?
More likely it's just that it took more than an arrangement with a
Japanese company to overcome the (historically accurate) perception of
British goods as less reliable than Japanese ones. I might have made
the same choice even if I knew they came off the same production line:
there was still plenty of scope for GEC to bugger it up in some way.

Did you manage to find the Philips' museum? It's on an industrial state
reasonably close to the centre (but can be a bit awkward to find, as
it's not well signed).

I was surprised to find that it is free - appears to be independently
run by former Philips employees - and contains lots of stuff you've
forgotten ever existed (assuming you ever encountered it the first time
round!)

Anyone remember the Philips one-knob radio? They've got several - I'll
leave to others to describe them (assuming anybody else can remember one!)

OMG!!
A BBQ with a built in MP3 player!! That's exactly what I've been looking for
to make my Barbeques go with a swing.
Do you have any more details?? and was there one that included a child's
playground ride?

:-)
