Default upconverter dvd player --component tv inputs?

I have a 3 year old 27 in. Toshiba CRT tv set without HDMI input
connections, but with component input connections. Would there be
any advantage at all in purchasing an upconverting dvd player over a
non-upconverting dvd player? All opinions, answers, etc. welcomed!

Upconverting of copy-protected discs over component is no longer allowed for
reasons of Digital Rights Management. Some older players could do it but new
players can't.

Deinterlacing (= converting 480i to 480p = progressive scan) is more important
to DVD picture quality than scaling ability. If your CRT accepts a progressive
signal then you might look at progressive scan players, upscaling or not.

What player are you using now, by what connection method? Are you using a
calibration disc? That can make a bigger difference than new hardware.

Hi :Bill: at present I am using a generic brand simple dvd player
with component outputs. works
satisfactorilyl. I have been reading that upconverting dvd players
will give a better pix, but my crt does not have hdmi input, I am
concerned. The set DOES have color stream inputs, whatever they are.

| Sadly, most (if not all) upconverting DVD players require the use of
| HDMI output to *be* an upconverting DVD player, and if true, the use of
| component is still possible, just not upconverted.
|
| If you can find a DVD player that offers upconverted output via HDMI,
| *and* non-upconverted output via component, you may want to consider
| that your existing CRT TV will eventually go toes up, and it's digital
| replacement will handle HDMI natively.

If memory serves, the last incarnation of Oppo players (970,971)
did offer upconversion through component (before the DRM nonsense got into
full swing).
The 971 also had the legendary Faroudja chipset. Check out eBay.

if your crt is a HD one then it will do upconverting anyway by itself.
and if it's a SD set then there's nothing to gain from an upconverting dvd
player.

There was a firmware hack for the 970 to allow component upconversion to 1080i.

The 971 also had the legendary Faroudja chipset. Check out eBay.

Not used on the component ports.

If you have a regular 4:3 CRT, upconverting really is not going to
make much of a difference.
If you have a 480i resolution TV, thats all your going to get. So I
would not bother with an upconverting player, a standard one would be
fine, and most come with component ouputs anyway if you want to use
them.
