I've got used to HD! For a while it was so wonderful, but now I'm blasé
about it. When we first got a telly it was great having a picture to look at, but it wasn't long before I took it for granted. It was the same with 625 line TV -- at first it seemed fantastic, but after a while I stopped noticing it. Then colour came along, and I'd watch anything if it was in colour. But of course the novety faded. The next thing was digital TV, but that was a step backwards rather than forwards, so it doesn't count. But HD came along and it knocked my socks off. Fabulous! But now, if a programme's in HD I watch it, and if it isn't I watch it. It isn't crucial whether it is or not. It's the programme material that counts. If we were still watching black-and-white 405 line TV would we actually enjoy it less than we we do now? Bill |

Bill Despite having three large flat screen TVs, Freeview, Freesat, and Virgin cable/broadband along with four PVRs, the overwhelming bulk of my media intake is spent listening to the radio, in fact I'm listening to 'Any Questions' now as I type this. Also those long periods of insomnia spent switching between radio four, five and talk sport! |

Bill I think that your happiest when you have the best available regardless of what that is, and your choice of what to watch will be more based on programme material rather than picture technology. One other aspect that has improved is the quality of the broadcasters cameras. This is very obvious when not so very old colour programmes are shown, -- Michael Chare |

It didn't on our LG set, but where 1080i content is concerned, it very much depends on how good your flat- panel's deinterlacer is, as I've discussed on here before. If we were still watching black-and-white 405 line TV would we actually enjoy it less than we we do now? Personally speaking, my brain is much more sensitive to digital artefacts - data compression, deinterlacing, rescaling, sampling and resampling - than analogue ones, so yes, I'd have probably enjoyed watching 405-lines at least as much as I do all current UK TV transmissions. I finally got to see some working 405-line sets in operation a few weeks back, but they were showing a 625-line DVD via standards convertor and modulator, so perhaps not the best example of system A's capabilities ![]() |

It's the programme material that counts. Exactly -- and if the material is for example nature scenes or sports, then that material is much better presented in high definition, particularly on large screen displays. Who wants to watch a soccer team playing on a billiard ball looking pitch with lots of pixellation due to MPEG-2 compression and low bandwidth? If we were still watching black-and-white 405 line TV would we actually enjoy it less than we we do now? Some genres such as comedy eg "Do Not Adjust Your Set" or dramas of the type where less is more, eg early Dr Who, the original Les Rois Maudits, do not necessarily need high definition or even color to be enjoyed. |

Bill If you enjoy cheap porn or itv's budget programs then no, I dont think we would miss anything if it was brodcast in 405 monochrome.. If you enjoy watching Discovery type of programs showing flowers, bugs, animals in the wild, or amazing landscapes then yes, you would miss HD.. The fact that people are willing to watch television shows on a IPOD (OMFGWTFBBQ) tells me that people are happy going to portable "crap" instead of good quality telly.. I dont watch UTube or download illegal DVD's cause the quality is forever poor.. There is a point where you dont find yourself happy watching TV.. If you went back to old broadcast standards on a 50" TV then it would probably make you run away ;P |

They still sometimes show old black and white films, mostly 4:3 with mono sound, and some of them are very enjoyable. It depends mostly on the story and the acting. As you say, it's the programme material that counts. Rod. -- Virtual Access V6.3 free usenet/email software from http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtual-access/ |
