Thanks No and No Only 1080p is from Blue Ray player or games console. There is however 1080i on freesat, and will probably be 720p on freeview in a couple of years (suitable STB/IDTV not yet available) 1080p (50 fps) of course consumes (everything else being equal) twice the bandwidth of 1080i 50. However 1080p24 consumes about the same as 1080i50, and it is this format used by many BluRay discs for movies. I can see no reason why this could not be used on DVB-S for film channels, do any receivers support it ? maybe because when the IBU were showing comparisons of the 3 formats (at IBC in amsterdam in 2007 when i saw it, but i suspect at earlier shows as well) it was a bad compromise. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...in-europe.html The EBU is sort of a broadcasters union for europe and at least gets involved in testing before actually recommending...... In practice 1080i was noticably lower quality than 720p for the same bandwidth use on the same source material (on the demo at the show they had all 3 formats on large screens at the same time to allow comparisons). the conclusion was 720p should be the preferred format for "bandwidth constrained" HD and 1080p for high bandwidth - which doesnt leave much room for 1080i. -- Regards - replace xyz with ntl |

Yes, but *24*p is there for cinematic purposes only. In a broadcasting environment it's ideal for transmitting 24 fps movies, isn't it, or do you still prefer to see everything speeded up by 4% ? How could 25/30/50/60 formats be better ? Horses for courses. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |

Thanks I suppose what I was really asking here is I am going to buy a new TV soon and wondered if I should go for 1080, or just buy a 720 model. I will not be using a games console, or playing blue ray discs. Its just for watching freeview and freesat and possibly might be used to hook up a PC occassionally. Would 720p do the job, or woud I be better getting a 1080 model? I am thinking a 37" or possibly 40" Samsung. Thanks |

For reasons that escape me they all seem to be 768. And no, I don't believe it is so they can share the production lines with computer monitors. Not at 37 inch. Andy |

Thanks No and No Only 1080p is from Blue Ray player or games console. What about if you hook a PC up the the TV and use it as a display monitor? Would 1080 be an advantage then? yes - i have a samsung 22" TV with 1080p - makes a really good widescreen monitor (although not as flexible in input options as a similar one i have which is a monitor only - only VGA computer input on the TV). Would a game console still work on a 720p? Would the picture be acceptable to play games on 720p, or would it not work at all? depends on the game. A lot of PC games seem to need / work best with bigger screens, since 1024 lines has been a common spec for a long time. having said that, i prefer strategy and simulators - YMMV. Thanks -- Regards - replace xyz with ntl |

I actually found it very difficult to tell the difference but I don't know what the signal souce was. The Full HD sets do tend to cost quite a bit more. I have always wanted to have one myself. -- Michael Chare |
