Default 1080p broadcasts on Freesat or Freeview?

Is there any 1080p HD broadcasts on Freeview or Freesat, or is there going
to be any channels using full HD in the near future?

Thanks

No and No
Only 1080p is from Blue Ray player or games console.

There is however 1080i on freesat, and will probably be 720p on freeview
in a couple of years (suitable STB/IDTV not yet available)

1080p (50 fps) of course consumes (everything else being equal) twice the
bandwidth of 1080i 50. However 1080p24 consumes about the same as 1080i50, and
it is this format used by many BluRay discs for movies. I can see no reason
why this could not be used on DVB-S for film channels, do any receivers
support it ?

No - it is not a broadcast format!

Also only the most recent models of LCD/Plasma display support 24p
..

It's a broadcast production format, and Googling seems to suggest that there
are 24p broadcasts in the US ?

What about if you hook a PC up the the TV and use it as a display monitor?
Would 1080 be an advantage then?

Would a game console still work on a 720p? Would the picture be acceptable
to play games on 720p, or would it not work at all?

Thanks

Present HD broadcasts on Sky and Freesat are at 1080, it's the fact they are
1080i (Interlaced) and not 1080p (Progressive) that's under discussion

What (maximum) resolution a games console outputs is determined by the actual
game. Many games are only authored at 720p anyway.

In terms of more desktop area , yes.

Yep.
Not sure about an X-box 360 , but the PS3 will run at 1080p or 720p , though
quite a lot of games will only render the graphics in 720p.
If connected to a 1080p screen they just get upscaled
