Default S2 with Dead Tuner?

It looks like the lone tuner on an old S2 has bit the dust. Pretty
strange to see the tuner go, no obvious damage after opening it up.
Are there known problems with these?

I hate to junk it, it has a lifetime sub on it. Can the IR blaster be
programmed to work on an old VCR to use the composite output to feed
the tivo? Where is there a list of IR codes (or is it programmable)?

There is a list of digital converters on the TiVo website with
compatable
convert boxes than can be used. Even if your VCR worked, it would be
useless after February.

That's only true if the OP uses OTA and not cable as the source. Analog
cable will still be around for some time.

I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.

It may be around some cable co. for soem time, but most will dump it or
reduce channel availability on the bandwidth hog asap. Some have already
completely abandoned it.

Yes, I am using analog cable, the Tivo site only has a short list of
compatible cable boxes, so it looks like this boxes recording days are
over.

Yes, I thought about that. The prime reason I want to avoid it is I
absolutely hate my cable company, I will probably go to DTV when/if
they come out with the new Tivo. My cable company charge $6.50 for
the box, I don't think this is much more then I would pay if I were to
just get another tivo and pay a monthly sub fee (is'nt it $7.00).
I'll pay $7/month to Tivo to fix this before I pay Cable vistion $6.50

Or consider a plan B, I got an older s2 off ebay with a dead hard disk, no
sub, (and a dvd burner too) rather cheap, moved mine (the hd), and
transferred the sub to/from the new/old box...

Is there a fee to transfer a lifetime sub? If not this is probably
the way to go.

or maybe plan c? send it to me!

Right now plan C is to use this box just for MRV and see how well one
tuner works out with the family; we just need to make it until the DTV
tivo come out (~1 year).

What would you do with it? I need to do a little more experimenting,
but I cannot even say for sure that the composite or Svid inputs will
be good. If they're not, this box will have pretty limited use.

Don't junk your TiVo, it still has value.

Assuming you have cable, then the IR blaster can be used to control
the set top box, and many have Composite output. If you were using
basic analog cable into the TiVo, then most any basic set top box will
work. Make sure it has Composite video out (Yellow RCA Jack), and
Stereo Audio Out (Red and White RCA Jack). (Check eBay.) If you want
to record digital channels or premium channels from cable, you will
need to get a set top box from the cable company, but if you don't
have one now, you weren't watching them before.

If you have satellite, then you have a receiver, and you could have
been using s-video or composite video all along. RF is the worst way
to record to TiVo.

If you are receiving Over the Air (OTA), you will need an ATSC
converter come February anyway, and many of them have the composite
video/stereo audio jacks. Look for one that also receives analog OTA,
but you may be able to live without that for the next 3 months, after
which that feature becomes worthless.

Finally, you can always call TiVo and they will sell you a new
(refurbished) DVR for $100-200 and transfer the lifetime subscription.

from an s2 to s2, usually no charge to xfer subs, it's going from an s2 to
s3 that costs... (sometimes, they have an xmas special, buy a new boxs3
and xfer a lifetime sub from an s1/s2 for free)... hey xmas is coming up!

or maybe plan c? send it to me!

I have a few s2dt's, and a few more s2's, here with annual instead of
lifetime subs that are on my home network (can record 7 channels at once,
but could always use more more more)... I record stuff and then play it off
devices in other rooms/(xfer recordings thru the network, and play them
wherever wanted, or store the recordings on my NAS/1TB usb drive)

got a home network?
