Yes - you're quite right!

I didn't realise that I had a backlog of unread posts when I encountered
it first time round and promptly responded.

Indeed, I was only trying to be pleasant and make small talk - some
people have no idea how to carry out an interesting conversation.
Although I think the subject matter may be part of the problem. I had
a sales call a few years ago from a call centre in west Wales, and to
my surprise the chap on the other end uttered an expletive and then
hung up - apparently because I had upset him when I asked if the
reason he had failed to find a useful job, such as a rent boy, was
because he was too ugly. Indeed, the art of conversation is dying

Indeed. Don't be too surprised if some precious flower's feelings are
hurt to the extent of causing five burly blue serge-clad turning up on
your doorstep to 'interview' you about verbal abuse or harrassment.
It's a sad day when some feckers can't take a joke.
