You can now get personal induction loops that go around the neck and have a

'Scuse my ignorance, but wouldn't it be easier/better to use
headphones?

The equipment my grandad had from the NHS in order to be able to hear
TV properly always bemused me, both by how clunky it was (a microphone
held with blutak on the TV speaker!), and how poor quality the result
was compared with simply plugging headphones into the TV.

(said TV already had a headphone output which did not cut-out the
speaker, and may even have had its own volume control. I don't know
why he didn't use it).

Cheers,
David.

Thanks to the sensible responders, got a BT Decor 1200 at Tesco last night
£18.
It has inductive coupler and my wife is finding it first rate and can now
use the telephone once again and hear clearly the other person. She can
even use the 'phone with the TV sound at normal volume in the room, up to
now as always had to lower TV volume to try to improve use of the 'phone.

Prior to her hearing aids she used headphones for the TV.
Now she has no problem with it and all happy with TV volume.
Incidently the first night she had them fitted we went to a really good
cinema, not multu-plex, with a block buster film with 6 track digital sound
and she thought it marvellous.
They are NHS digital hearing aids as well.
Talking loops in a Church if she uses the 'T' loop she only gets the voice
and not the music so does not use the loop there. Sounds to me only speech
passes through it and not the music.
Not been to a concert hall or theatre.

It's because usually in a church only stand mikes are used, with maybe

Agreed.

High wattage dimmed lighting can cause problems (due to switching
transients on each mains cycle) for hearing aids on the T position.

Shouldn't do hearing aids respond to a varying magnetic field not an RF
one from dimmers. What can be a problem is inadvertant mains loops
producing hum.

Trouble is you then have an open mic (for the cong) when the vic is giving
the sermon, not good for clarity of the sermon as the cong mic will be
picking up some of the PA. Fine if you have some one actively mixing the
PA/loop feeds but the vast majority of churches don't. I doubt an
automixer or a noise gate would reliably work week in week out without
regular checking.

That's the fault of the church for not putting a music feed through. They
should have a separate mix for the inductive loop to enable music and the
congregation singing to go into the loop.

Yes I would think that the wireless tie mic. could well be the one feeding
the loop.
She does have no problems listening to normal PA which we are of course
listening too.
I would think the Church PA guys have plenty on without a second mixer for
this loop to operator as well. The PA system and the computer to put words
on to a screen via a projector.

A good place for a simple voice/music control for the loop would be at the
organ console. Almost everything else can be preset or ALC.

Organ you mean one of those pipe things?

No Churches have music groups from 2 or 3 musicians up to a full band
complete with Singers. Hence they have large mixing deck for PA.

Our vicar could certainly make use of a radio lav.
