Hi all
As of coming Friday we will be rid of our Dish network. We have a HDTV but it has no built in tuner. We were under the impression that we were going to be able to keep the recorder from Dish but turns out we were lied to when we signed up. We are not planning on going to cable. We would still like to see off air tv and HDTV and be able to record it since we never watch shows on day that air. I know we can get an antenna and put it on roof top. Besides doing that what else can we do to record off air TV? I have heard of set top boxes ect. What are your opinions? We need to get this set up by Friday. Thanks |

Thanks If you are looking for a DVR to record over the air TV broadcasts, the Tivo HD has dual sets of NTSC, ATSC (digital broadcast), and QAM (for digital cable) tuners. You will have to pay a monthly fee for the programming information for the Tivo. The baseline TivoHD only comes with a 160 GB hard drive, but many people have swapped in bigger drives for more storage or added the external DVR extender hard drive that Tivo offers. The other option is to set up a PC with a ATSC tuner card and software for recording broadcast programs. I'm sure others here will push that option, but it does require some PC experience and patience to get it and keep it working. If you need help with the antenna selection and setup, post your zip code so we can look up the local stations and what frequency bands they are on and will be on next year. Alan F |

Hubby knows about pc. But doesn't that require lot of storage in your pc?
Also is the resolution like TV or like YouTube video? low resolution? Zip is 84074. There is an olddddd antenna on our roof right now but I believe hubby said that we can not use that once the DVR/Tuner is gone. I am trying to do research so we can decide which way to go. Thanks for all the help. Amee "Alan F" wrote in message zip m... Veris and Amee Young wrote: Hi all As of coming Friday we will be rid of our Dish network. Thanks There are set top boxes that receive OTA HD signals, but they are rather expensive. One that most seem to prefer is the HD Tivo (be sure you get the one that will record OTA signals, abt $300 + $12.95 per month). You would do far better to simply retain your Dish (or switch to DirecTV, they have some great deals for new subscribers). -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ |

OTA HD recorders by Sony have been discontinued, but can be purchased on
ebay. Models: HDG-HDD250 and DHG-HDD500 The advantage is that you pay no monthly fee to anyone. |

Thanks To get up and running by Fri., your choices are limited: Cable, Dish, DirectTV, AT&T or TIVO. You might try Craigslist for a used OTA HD receiver with a hard drive. LG also makes these. Don't think you can do Ebay by Fri. Find out who has the lowest upfront costs (likely cable or maybe AT&T). This gives you time to find your best solution and cancel your temporary one. |
