Default TOT -- a flash of temper

A few years ago, and maybe still you could get numbers on a German cd rom
for about 100 quid with every number on it regardless of status.

Besides, you could just guess any number and probably get someone.

I'm fed up with the pre recorded ones as they quite plainly come from
overseas. How is it they get such good lines yet when I need to talk to a
friendly Indian call centre it sounds like its under a pile of pillows?

Umm, I am confused.

If the telephone number is unlisted, how could they get hold
of it from the national database?

Which national database were they referring to, though?

Lying *******s that's what they are. They bought it from some unprincipled
rat who we were foolish enough to give it to. Probably a bank or even the
NHS.

Another very tall story. Go on, tell us you went and corrected the
phone system previously installed by another company you can't
name as you know it isn't true. Isn't that the sort of story you give
when doing jobs?
Do you think anyone is bothered that your phone was ringing?
Find something else to do with your time as your continual off-topic
and fictional posts are fairly boring.

They're not boring to most of us here. If they're boring to you then your best
course would be to stop wasting your time reading them and do something else
instead.

If you want a list of suggestions as to what to do instead I'm sure you will
only have to ask and somebody will furnish one. We try to be helpful.

In which case, should you not have set the followup

for all the vituperative comments)?

I was really annoyed. These things don't usually make me mad. But today it
did. I don't know why.

Contrary to what many in this thread seem to think, the vast majority
of calls, such as the one Bill describes receiving, are not made to
numbers purchased from anyone or anywhere - what the little ****es use
is a computer programme that automatically dials through the various
blockes of numbers that have been allocated to telcos. Some numbers
are not in service, others will have fax machines or modems hanging
off them and others will have telephones connected - some of these
will be busy with people making phone calls. That leaves a small
minority of numbers that can be called and the recipients spammed with
whatever is in fashion this week.

I had one of these calls a few days ago - the phone rang and upon
answering it I was met with a recorded message saying I had won a
holiday - oh yippee I thought - I've won a holiday in a competition I
didn't enter.

This recorded message tells the spammers computer that they have got a
live call and the call is then allocated to one of their humans.

I listened to the spiel and then asked the young lady if she liked
giving men oral sex. I lost my free holiday as she then hung up :-(

Quite. A lot seem to randomly generate numbers until they hit success.

I'm registered with the TPS and I string callers along until I find out who
they are and then hang up and report them via the TPS website.
It's a small and ineffectual gesture - but it makes me feel slightly better
about it!

Are you registered with the telephone preference service to stop cold
calling?

I am and it doesn't. Merely reduces the number. No controls over
foreign call centres.

I've had a few calls lately from an 070 number which if you answer just gets
a dialing tone, obviously a scam so I've complained to
http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/ not that I expect much.

I get these filling up my answering machine. They seem to come in little
burst of activity, 6 calls a day for around 2 weeks and then a break for
around 4 months.

This recorded message tells the spammers computer that they have got a
live call and the call is then allocated to one of their humans.

The other scam with the automated message is the premium rate phone
number to call them back to claim the prize and the free bit of the
holiday doesn't include the travel to the resort. I believe these calls
are something to do with the Disney Corporation as the holidays are
always to their resorts or hotel.

My caller display says all the calls are 'international' so cannot be
reported to the TPS which is becoming somewhat of a joke for stopping
unwanted junk calls.

Quite likely, the 070 "personal" numbers are charged at a much higher
rate than the mobile numbers which occupy most of the 07 range, up to
42p/min.
