Do combo DVD/VCR units have RF modulator built in so
that one can use with old tube TV that does NOT have
direct inputs?

My Goldstar does. It is a fine piece of equipment, BTW, for the price.
I use it w/ a TV set so old it doesnt even have RF inputs.

The newer ones today might not have that feature, but you could always
buy an RF modulator at Radio Shack.

I hooked one up for a friend once, and the unit had two
sets of video outputs labeled VHS out and DVD out. Both
had to be hooked up. There was an RF output in the VHS
section. I suspect, that because the VHS output did not
pass the DVD video through, that the RF output was
strictly for the VHS also.

I use a converter.

I use a female RF-to-spade lug converter.I just screwed it on top of
the rabbit ear connection.
Frankly, I was amazed it had the through-put to handle DVD.

The rabbit ear connection is the RF input for the TV set.
