Default Digital Box off Ethernet

....snip...
I think the last part of your suggestion is the key here - switching
hardware that supports multicast-IP. It's not readily available at
present.

Paul DS.

Actually it's more common than you think. There are numerous cheap Gb
switches that are IGMP aware around. This would certainly not be out of
the way for a hotel installing such a system for VoD and what have you.
I've even toyed with the idea for my place, and i'm not Rothschild.

Actually I have a cheap ADSL router that is IGMP switching aware on its
ports. The one from solwise.co.uk I have found has lots of these feaures
like this.

Sincerely,

Rob.

In was certainly thinking of home rather than hotel or office use. I wasn't
aware of the Solwise router but the issue with potential home use (where
quite a lot of the commerial outfits would like to do this) is getting to
common (Linksys, Netgear etc) routers to support this and in parallel the
ISPs. It will be interesting to see if/when this really takes off.

Box is not POE; it has a mains adapter. What if I use the USB socket
into my laptop usb?? - would I get the picture (like the usb output
from a hauppauge win tv usb box) and use the av for sound.

Very unlikely....you would need drivers, and it's unlikely Windows
update seem them either.

I would be more tempted to put a nix install on a usb stick and see if the
thing will boot from it ;P ...
There's a high chance that this "product" boots from the network, but you
could stick it behind a router and see if it will connect through!..

From experience with the Amino STBs it will almost certainly have its
own in built 16 or 32Mb flash disk. It's unlikely that it will boot from
a USB stick or over the network as a regular thing but who knows.

Unless your mini distro has been compiled for the relevant processor
(the Amino's use a PowerPC) then it's not going to run anything off your
stick anyway.

Sytem works with laptop/pc - etherenet cable goes into TV box or
straight into pc. Downloaded a bit of software and all FTV channels.
Not bad.
