Default Plasma or LCD

Plasmas do use more power but I'd dispute they run hotter. All of the
plasmas I looked at in the shops at the weekend were cool. The fans
weren't even spinning.

I think he meant they generate more heat, which is obviously true if they
use more power.

The actual temperature will depend on the surface area giving off the heat,
obviously.

The LED matrix backlight sounds like a really good solution, and
I think it might completely transform LCD technology and give
plasma a real run for its money.

The next generation of "LED" type screens, OLEDs (organic LEDs) do
not have backlights.

The competition and "replacement" for plasma, is probably laser TV.

OLED displays have been promised for some time now, but are very slow
in coming - production has proved to be difficult so it will be
several years before they can approach the large screen size and low
cost of LCD.

Mass-production has not brought the cost of plasma screens down as
much as LCD and this has resulted in several manufacturers quietly
reducing their range of plasma sets. A walk round any TV showroom
shows that LCDs are now predominant. This is not to deny that plasmas
do have certain advantages and some strong supporters!.
