Default How Good is Freeview Audio Quality

I have a Sony Triniton stereo CRT TV which has pretty good
audio and have recently acquired a Humax 9200 PVR which
has audio outputs. I am wondering about getting a mid-
prices stereo system to feed the audio into.

How good is the audio on Freeview transmissions. Can it
drive a woofer? How would Radio 3 sound?

Noticeably better than from a DAB source.

There's nothing the matter with Freeview sound, unless digital reception is
poor, in which case you get dropouts.

Some channels transmit with a low bitrate and programmes that once had a
soundtrack in stereo (with surround sound encoding) are now in mono.

The quality of the audio on Freeview often follows the (poor) quality of
the accompanying picture.

Which stations have actually downgraded from stereophonic to monophonic?

Virgin 1 for one.

Hierarchy is roughly: -

5.1 on DVD
CD
Nicam on analogue TV (supports Dolby surround)
FM radio
Digital TV (DTT or satellite)
Analogue satellite (even this was pretty good and in stereo)

large gap

DAB
AM radio

I listen to Radio 3 a lot. My old Tivoli PAL is a lot better than
anything you'd get on Freeview, and miles and miles better than any
DAB I've heard.

What I like about Freeview Radio 3 through is the ease of recording. I
have a Humax PVC and record a lot of R3, then upload it to my PC,
convert to MP3 then put on my MP3 player to 'listen again' while
working to and from work - for that the sound quality is perfectly
acceptable.

I have no professional expertise in broadcasting. But I can speak as
someone who is interested in audio quality.

In my experience, the sound quality of DTTV is much better than DAB. I can
hear compression artefacts in most DAB broadcasts, but I can't hear them on
DTTV.

DTTV sound has a good frequency range: you asked about whether your woofer
will come into play on DTTV sound. The answer is definitely *yes*.

I repeat that I know nothing of the technicalities. But I can tell you that
DTTV sound seems to use the full audio frequency range (at least at the
bottom end - my ears aren't good enough for me to comment on the higher
audio ranges). There is no audible distortion (in terms of the traditional
harmonic and intermod distortion), and personally I haven't noticed any of
that distinctive "metallic" sound of over-compressed DAB.

I always play my DTTV through a pretty good hi-fi setup, and it usually
sounds great.

I know there are some dodgy stations, but I think R3 and its ilk are OK.
