Why standby?

the thread "Humax Freesat PVR" prompted me to wonder why keep TV and
various boxes on standby? The specs on all I've seen quote the standby
usage, but why not switch off at the mains? I have a satellite Topfield,
and flat screen TV and a Bose amplifier. I switch all off when finished
watching or recording, seems painless to me. Any reasons to stay on
standby would be welcomed.

I'm disabled so I leave everything on. If I had to switch off/on at
the mains it could take me a hour or so.

To receive firmware updates, to notice schedule changes for programmed
recordings but mainly because people (myself included) are lazy and
prefer to be able to switch it on from the remote.

PVRs need to placed in standby to record. Often I often have no idea
what time a programme is broadcast because my PVR searches automatically
for programme name and automatically sets timers. The PVR needs to be in
at least standby to wake up to record.

All other equipment in my stack is connected to a remote control mains
switch which is turned off when I have finished watching TV. This only
requires one key press on the remote.

And to perform recordings. A box that is switched off cannot record!

the whole point of a recorder is it records things while you are away - it
can't do that when it's switched off.

Very true, although I wonder how the promised 'accurate record' function
on Freesat will work, if the Humax box deactivates the LNBs in standby ?

I'll try and pop back to the Humax stand tomorrow, and find out !

required time, recheck the EPG and adjust the timer.

Accurate timing depends on the broadcasters providing accurate EPG
information and as the same broadcasters that cannot be bothered on
Freeview are also on Freesat there may still be major problems.

It may be better to ask if a mix and match policy can be adopted -
automatically adjusting start and stop times AND providing start and end
padding.

I was assuming that the 1W power in standby is achieved by switching off
everything except the circuits responsible for managing the recording
schedule. All PVRs can wake up from standby to record.

The previous set timer would turn on the box , say, 10 minutes ahead of
the scheduled recording to supply power to the LNB and then the EPG
would populate. The box would check 5 minutes later for any changes to
the EPG.
