Hello,
We have a Samsung LN-S4041D 40" LCD TV. I'm not sure if it has a QAM tuner. I'm a Comcast subscriber who just currently has the Analog connection and no converter boxes. Should I be able to get the HDTV channels directly over coaxial cable or do I need a converter box? I really don't care about any HD channels other than the local stations like CBS, ABC and NBC so if anyone has any suggestions to help I would appreciate it. I'll call Comcast to find out but I hate their marketing as they try to upsell you their entire network package. Thanks for your time, Nick |

There is an FCC ruling that if a cable company carries the HD feed of a broadcast (OTA) station, that feed must be available without rental of additional equipment from the company. I don't know where you are, but I suggest you head over to AVS forums which has a number of local HD forums where you should be able to get some info for your area. ** Posted from http://www.teranews.com ** |

Just plug the coax directly into the TV and see what comes up in the auto-search. A_C ---- Click here for the latest on Clean Coal: http://tinyurl.com/5zmp8x |

Attach the cable to your ATSC tuner and do a channel scan..... |

What if I subscribe to digital cable with a STB? I dont want to pay the
extra $15 per month for the HD box to get 12 channels, but if I am hooked up through the digital box will it block those HD channels that I am currently receiving through a straight coax (analog) feed? Attach the cable to your ATSC tuner and do a channel scan..... The digital converters don't block anything to TVs that aren't connected through them. I can't make any guaranties about analog signals getting to the TV set the converter is attached to though. Some cable providers are still distributing duplicates of some channels as an analog "extended service" programming tier. A digital converter might block those signals for the TV attached to them, especially if the TV is connected to the converter with composite, component, S-Video or HDMI cables. Many cable channels are encrypted. Encryption is the modern equivalent of an intelligence agency sending a message using a secret code. As delivered a ATSC/QAM television set doesn't have the key that's required to decode the program. Most cable companies rent converters to their customers that are quipped with the necessary key, but the converters will refuse to forward the resulting program to a TV until the cable provider transmits an authorization code to that individual converter. Some TVs have a slot for a rental only device called a Cable Card. The Cable Card adds the decryption capability to the TV. Like the set top converters, the Cable Card will only enable reception when it receives authorization for that individual card from the cable company. While Cable Card rental is normally less than the rental for a set top converter, Cable Cards lack some of the popular set top converter features including video on demand, pay per view and an on screen program guide. |

I don't believe it's an extra $15.00 It's the difference from a sd digital box and the HD digital box. Comcast gives me 40 HD channels including the premium ones. Well I don't believe my model has the QAM tuner but how would someone with one still get them? The Comcast channels for digital for my area are begin at 200 so no TV would be able to pull these in without a HD box. Anyway we don't have any so I believe that the first box is free. I picked up the box and the digital channels worked immediately thereafter. We shall see what my bill will look like next month but I'm assuming the price should still be the same.
