not near as versatile.

Bull****. Versatile is useless in the face of the lack of usability. The
PC-based DVR solutions are garbage in comparison. They're just too much
hassle to use.

Depends.

As soon as you are interested in "hacking" an appliance, the usability
benefit goes straight out the window. This includes installing extra software,
getting into the box to install extra software and installing more storage.

Things that fall under the heading of "Tivo maintenance" are similarly
bothersome regardless of which type of platform you're running. Although a
PC based solution does allow you to manipulate things directly.

Can't wait to see what the procedures are like for HD TivoToGo.

Someone that would be satisfied with a "stock appliance" will also
probably be perfectly content with the cable provider's (PVR) hardware.

That said, in day to day usage a PC PVR has no disadvantage compared
to a Tivo.

And just how do you come to that conclusion. My system, which consist of 3
machines with a total of 5 HDTv tuners (removed the 6th as it was never
used) has been working great for years. A hell of a lot better and a hell
of a lot cheaper than 3 Tivo HD's. Using a MythTV system is a hell of lot
easier than trying to use 3 separate Tivo HD's. And did I mention a hell
of a lot cheaper.

Default More How clever is the scheduler?

I just ran into an interesting quirk of the scheduler on my Tivo-HD.

I asked for a season pass for Big Brother, and since it's a live show
sometimes, for it to record 1 hour past the end of the show.
I asked for a season pass to Cold Case.

Since today channel 11-1 is presenting Big Brother followed by Cold
Case, it's busy recording channel 11-1 on *BOTH* tuners. Well, I
guess I asked for it. But it is chewing up disk space.
