Hi All

I can't find the answer to this from the sky website. Obviously I'm not
looking in the right place.

Is the SkyPlayer similar to BBC's iplayer in that it allows you to either
watch online or download for viewing later?

To me, it sounds like a euphemism for someone who participates in a gambling
channel.

Or an addition to the OSI model to allow for propriety VoIP.

I'm looking for the bit that says that content is downloadable.

From what I can tell from reading through that (rather unclear) website, the
means of viewing is primarily downloading 'timebombed' files that will give
you un-limited viewing for a certain length of time, having said that it
seems that some programmes (but not films) can be watched online.

EXTRACT FROM FAQ:

Q. Do I need to download the whole show before I can watch it?
A. You will need to download movies in full before you can begin to watch
them. However, some entertainment, documentary and sports shows have the
option to play directly from Sky Player without the need to download first.
Whenever possible, we try and offer you a free 'teaser' of the actual
episode you're interested in downloading. Look out for the 'TEASER' button
on the video details page.

There is in fact a fairly comprehensive FAQ, it's just a bit hard to find
(you need to click on the little 'Help' button in the top-right of the main
screen)

I installed their app and started downloading a short (30 minute) programme.
It was slow, and I gave up after a couple of hours as it had only reached
9%. Certainly BBC's iplayer files seem to be better seeded.

The reason I initially asked the question was that I wasn't at the PC that
you have to select as the one that you're going to use for viewing. So I
couldn't test it to see. That seems a bit strange to me. You have to tick a
box to say that the PC you're currently using is the one where you wish to
view the programmes.

Also, the amount of free downloads seems limited, but maybe that's linked
with the Sky account.

As for the timebombing, I suspect that that can be circumvented in the same
way as the iplayer's files and probably any other DRM media.
