Default Copy from a Humax PVR to a PC

A little off topic, but I thought I would try this NG to ask:

Is it possible to copy a radio programme that has been recorded onto a
Humax PVR to a PC using the USB port found behind the flap at the
front of the Humax?

Yes. You can copy TV programmes as well.

I suspect it may not be so easy - although mine is a Matsui not a Humax.

As far as the PVR is concerned, a radio programme is the same as a TV
programme so if you download it via USB you will have the 'picture' as
well. You are then faced with the problem of seperating or re-recording
the sound from the composite.

I took the easy option and made a SCART-3.5mm jack cable, used the sound
line input, and copied it (in my case) using Cool Edit Pro.

Hi paul,

Thanks for your reply - can you point me to any instructions of how to
do this? There is no mention of it in the Humax handbook.

Instructions for transferring recorded programmes are
provided on files with Humax's ELinker installation
software. There would have been a CD with the box, or
you can download it from the Humax support site. Be
sure to follow the instructions exactly during
installation - don't connect the box before the
drivers are installed.

You'll need external software to split out the audio
from the Humax ".ts" file and convert it to mp3 (or
whatever). Free programs include VideoLan Client
(vlc) and ProjectX.

Note the new Humax PVRs don't have transfer capability
- only the 9200T can do it.

Do a search for "Humax Media Controller". Alternatively you can try the
Humax eLinker software.
Both have their niggles and performance is dire, so be prepared to wait
ages for files to be transferred.
Then you need something to play (or convert or demultiplex) the Transport
Stream files you will end up with.

Only snag with this is it takes place in real time? And surely any
computer with an audio input has simple audio recording software?

But it's how I do it as I have an existing audio link between Hi-Fi and
computer.

....For which I use HDTVtoMPEG2.

There is useful information on the hummy forum e.g. see:
http://www.hummy.org.uk/forums/archi...php/t-449.html.

There are also details for modifying the Humax to read the disk
directly, rather than via the Humax drivers, see:
http://humaxdisk.wikispaces.com/Disk+Cabling+and+Mods.

The VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) will play the Humax
downloaded .ts files directly on a PC or you can use this or similar
programs to build a media server on a LAN.

This group have done some work on this ...
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/TwinRIP/

"It has been found to work with other recorders that use the STAVFS
filesystem. There has been particular success with the OpenTel 4200 device,
and TwinRIP has limited success with certain early Humax recorders. It
can't extract from later 8000+ series Humax units due to encrypted header
blocks. The 9200 series Humax doesn't use the STAVFS format but an
extractor for this model is in the Files section."

The Humax-supplied utilities for transferring data from your Hummy to a PC
are dreadful.

You need HumaxMediaController:

http://www.enigma.eclipse.co.uk/huma...Controller.htm

It's a console application (runs in a "DOS box") but if you read the prompts
on the screen it is all self-explanatory. It works MUCH more reliably than
any of the alternatives.

That software will transfer the transport stream (.ts) files to your PC.
There are several programs around that will let you edit .ts files and
convert them into something more useful. I strongly recommend VideoReDo
TVSuite from:

http://www.videoredo.com

I use these two programs with my Hummy all the time. It works well.
