Default Which hdtv box to buy

Verizon installed new cables and I am renting 4 boxes from them,
Motorola HDQ1P 6200-2

What box should I buy to replace Verizon's rental boxes.

Unless the customer owned converters contain CableCards rented from
Verizon, I doubt Verizon would activate them to display the out of town
channels in the programming package you subscribe to.

The only STBs or DVRs that you can buy to replace the Verizon Fios
STBs are ones that have cable card slots such as the TivoHD DVR. You
will have to lease cable cards for $4/month for each unit. Verizon is
still not providing Multi-stream cable cards (M-cards), but is supposed
to "real soon" now. The M-cards will support 2 tuners, so you would need
only 1 M-card for the TivoHD instead of 2 standard cable cards to use
both tuners.

If your TV has a QAM tuner and a cable card slot, you can get a cable
card from Verizon in place of the STB. However, you will lose VOD and
the guide data with the cable card. Verizon Fios TV sends the VOD and
guide data via the internet connection, not QAM cable.

If you have a newer TV with a clear QAM tuner (which is often thrown
in with the ATSC OTA tuner) and primarily only use that TV to watch the
broadcast networks, you can watch them without a STB. Verizon provides
the local digital broadcast stations with the HD & SD sub-channels,
other local stations, public access channels (PEGs), the music channels,
WGN (55-100), and a few info channels in the clear, i.e. not encrypted.
The SD and PEGs are usually located in the QAM 63.x to 68.x block, the
digital broadcast locals in the 71.x to 75.x or higher block. The
digital broadcast locals are provided with the PSIP channel mapping
info, so most QAM tuners will map them to the broadcast channel numbers
such a 4-1, 7-1, 7-2, 26-1.

Do NOT buy the Motorola or Scientific Atlanta boxes on Ebay. Most of
them are stolen and Verizon will not activate them. Besides Verizon uses
the QIP series of STBs and DVRs from Motorola which support IP that
differ from the standard cable boxes.
