Default What made 1% of Freeview boxes "stop working"?

Happened to find this on the Freeview website, "Transmission changes
affecting some Freeview digital boxes 1st July 2008 - 5th August 2008: Some
early-manufactured digital boxes will stop working and viewers will need to
replace their equipment to continue receiving the Freeview service."

"The number of affected boxes represents around 1% of all Freeview equipment
sold to date. This only affects people who bought some of the early models
of digital boxes branded Daewoo, Labgear, Triax and Bush and is limited to
the following models: Daewoo DS608P, Labgear DTT100, Triax DVB 2000T,
Portland DP100, Daewoo SV900, Bush IDVCR01"

I'm not affected, but does anyone know what the big change was, and why it
made some boxes stop working completely? I know the change to 8k mode is
going to make old boxes redundant but I thought that wasn't going to happen
until after analogue switch off.

Do "On Digital" boxes like the Nokia 9850T still work now?

As the number of services (TV + radio + text) grows, this has increased
the size of the "NIT" to the point where it has to be split into
multiple parts, this is a perfectly valid thing to do within the DVB-T
specification, but the affected boxes assumed that since Freeview didn't
initially use a split NIT, it never would. Those boxes were always
wrong, but it only just started to matter.

Some of them, and maybe some older IDTVs too, but the current change has
nothing to do with 8k mode.

Supposedly the vast majority will, tests were done using DTG's "zoo" of
STBs, some of the original OnDigital boxes and similar aged IDTVs may not.

Will this limited set of boxes stop working completely, or just only
work partially - say, only getting some channels?

Is there any way of telling - ideally without opening - whether one has
an 8k-compatible OnDigital box or not?

Didn't you read all the contributions to the thread you started on July 11th,
in uk.tech.broadcast titled "obsolescent Freeview STBs on Y&Y". Possible clues
lie within that.

I just stumbled across this forum, maybe someone can give some advice?
About 4 weeks ago my Sony KDL32DX150 (CRT with integrated freeview)
Stopped receiving all ITV and Channel 4 broadcasts (Everything on
Channel 22) I tried to autotune it, but when searching it sticks at 12%
and will not complete the search. Otherwise the TV works perfectly. I'm
not an electronics expert, but has anyone come across this fault or
could it be something to do with aforementioned change to freeview
broadcast on July 1st ?

I think I did.

Possible clues lie within that.

Ah, you mean the ...

" Is there a list of OnDigital boxes that can't handle 8k?
Never seen one, and any support died along with ITV Digital.
I'm guessing, but perhaps the later 8k models (if they exist at all)
might have an ITV Digital logo on the front rather than the OnD one.
(Don't be fooled by that silly ITV Digital front panel sticker that was
sent out to all the customers shortly after the rebranding :-) )"

.... section. With "AFAIK the only ones which were 2K-only used a
Motorola chip set. Whip the top off and have a look... " a few posts
later. I was wondering if there was a way of telling without the
whipping, as it were - and/or if anyone else can confirm the suggestion
(that if it isn't Motorola it's OK). Someone also posted a pointer to
the BBC white paper at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/whp/whp...les/WHP029.pdf, which was
mostly about trying out different 2K modes, though a footnote on page 2
(5 in the .pdf) says "A brief test...the 9 STBs changing...to the
equivalent 8K mode. None of the STB's was able to recognise the 8K
variant."

I see my ...

"How do I replace my box?
Owners of Daewoo, Portland and Bush branded digital boxes should call
the appropriate number below for further assistance:"
Has anyone here done so, and if so what do they say?

.... section only got one ("Would be very interested to know.") answer.
[I agree with the end of that post, but of course it isn't going to
happen (-:!]

I can confirm (having been away for a few weeks) that my Daewoo DS608P
still worked on my return. However, after telling it to rescan, it
returned with "No channels found" and now appears to be effectively
unusable. Transmitter is Winter Hill.

Tried a Pacific PSTB1 which someone gave me and was in my junk pile and
this works fine. Interesting to note Aria has them for a tenner:
