I'm planning to go for Freesat from Sky. As I mentioned in another
thread today, I already have a Panasonic DMR-EX75B DVD recorder and an analog TV, connected to each other via a SCART lead. I wouldn't recognise a Sky digital box if it bit me in the ankle, and I couldn't find any helpful information on the web, so I need to know what outputs are available from the box: 1. Is there a Video (or S Video) Output plus Left/Right Audio Outputs from the Sky box that I can plug into the DVD recorder video and audio inputs? and/or 2. Is there a SCART output from the Sky box that I can plug into the SCART input of the DVD recorder? -- Ian |

All bog standard Sky Digiboxes are the same:- Two Scart sockets; marked TV and VCR The TV Scart outputs RGB and Composite (CBVS) video, as well as a WSS flag on Pin 8 The VCR Scart can only output CBVS. Additionally if you apply an RGB or CBVS signal into the VCR Scart socket, this is passed through to the TV Scart output socket when the box is in standby. Useful if your TV only has a single RGB equipped Scart input etc, There is also L and R analogue audio available on Phono (aka RCA) sockets. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |

Press the ext-link button on the Panasonic and use autoview on the Sky box for acurate recordings. I know this only records CVBS and not RGB but I use this method and find the pictures perfectly acceptable. -- ^..^ This is Kitty. I dislike Sky, so don't subscribe, so ICBW about the second point, but
last I heard: 1) FreeSatFromSky has no Hard Disk Recording or High Definition, both are subscription only. 2) Sky+ Boxes with Hard Disk recording won't let you dub stuff off the HD onto an external recorder. Unless there are channels such as Five that you simply must have that are available on FreeSatFromSky but not from FreeSat or FTA (and ISTR rumours here that the Five channel set may be FTA in the not-too-distant future), if you wish to put stuff for permanent record onto DVD or Blu-Ray, then the best approach is to go FreeSat or FTA, and get a box with Hard Disk recording that can be networked, or connected to your PC via FireWire or USB. FTA/FreeSat/Sky+ boxes record the digital stream directly, so there's no loss of quality through conversion to analogue and back to digital again, as there is with our Panasonic DVD/HD Recorders. The direct connection to your PC by a recognised method is much more convenient. I'm still on SD, so my own setup can only stand as an example for a HiDef system. I have a Dreambox FTA Receiver connected to my network hub with its HD shared on the network, and when I'm ready to make a DVD, I just copy the files via the network onto my hard disk and apply the authoring software. Really it's *SO* simple compared with all the faffing around with other methods. With the Pace Twin Freeview DTT, I have to open up the box, remove the HD, and plug it into my PC, while with the Panasonic DVD/HD Recorder, there's all the dubbing via easily scratched DVD-RAMs, and the reencoding loses quality. PS: Spell checker's subliminal suggested replacement for FreeSatFromSky? Restrooms! Is it trying to say that's all it's fit for? Power up a Sky HD box [1] without any form of card, and you'll get BBC HD and Luxe HD. Stick any old current FTV card in it, and in addition up pops C4 HD. It's arguably a better deal than a BBC Freesat HD box, because so far ITV HD has proved to be a total waste of space, if you're fortunate enough to actually catch it broadcasting. C4 HD is currently not available on BBC Freesat because it's encrypted. [1] Sky HD boxes can be obtained from ebay for around 150 quid (the same as a new Humax Freesat HD box.) I've been waiting for the Freesat HD PVR, but as a stop gap I've got myself a second hand Sky HD box, which I use my 5 year old FTV card in. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |

Thanks for explaining that, Mark.
I'm trying to remember now why/whence I gained that impression. Could it be that the boxes supplied from FreeSatFromSky, as opposed to 2nd hand Sky HD ones obtained independently, aren't HD? It's nothing more than the fact that Sky choose not to offer a 'Freesat' deal for their HD box. Mind you if they did, they'd also have to offer PVR/Sky+ functionality, because all Sky HD boxes are PVRs. In my application the hard disc is redundant and unusable, but still spins with futility ! -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |
