Is there a huge difference in quality between HD programmes through Sky and
downloaded HD rips available from the internet (via torrents etc).
I have a few HD mkv video files (720p). Would these be comparable to a
genuine HD feed?

How would anyone know as we haven't seen the downloads you've seen.
And there are other ways of viewing HD then Sky.

Hence the subject heading FFS. Directed at people who have viewed
downloaded HD clips AND have access to HD via a genuine feed (Sky / freesat
etc)

they are re-encoded so generally speaking are to true HDTV what an xvid file
is to a dvd.
if you want the broadcast quality, plenty of transport streams are to be
found which are unaltered from the broadcast.

I'd imagine that the 'quality' of downloaded rips would vary quite
considerably, depending on the equipment/software/skills/knowledge of the
person that created them.
The best would probably be as good as broadcast quality, the worst probably
nowhere near...
