Any thoughts on a trouble free unit that get's it done?? Oh, without taking out a 2nd mortgage to pay for it. I think my new Onkyo TX-SR705 A/V 3 input HDMI 1.3 Receiver is SUPERB! I've had it since Nov 07. Cost now about $600.... plus I paid $720 plus tax in Wisconsin. Been reading about them And have read that they are a bit weak when upconverting. Have you noticed this? I do not own a 1080p HDTV yet.... Just a 4 year old Sony 34" 1080i CRT..... My Onkyo 805 HD-DVD player has the Reon upconvert chip set to 1080i output for Std Def DVDs. This 'discontinued unit' player has more upconvert capability than I can use at 1080i now. This HD-DVD player has no input port capability.... just DVDS. I do note that the 'newer' Onkyo TX-SR705 A/V receiver has two (2) built in small powered fans on the bottom of the 705 unit. Heat is no problem. I use the Sony 34" HDTV firmware to do TV upconverts of my Std Def TV video signals to 1080i.... I have yet to deal with 1080p HDTV in the 52" size.... but I think I am partially prepared via my HDMI 1.3 purchase requirement from Nov 2007 forward. |

I have a little different slant on whether or not I need a receiver to up convert video or whether or not I want my video running through my receiver at all. Anymore, most of the video hardware will up convert, if it's not HD already. Then you have the TV trying to convert to it's native resolution. If you run all of your video gear through your receiver you have decided that the receiver is doing a better job of up converting than all of your other hardware. Convenience of switching or limited digital connections, on one device or another, may present the need to run everything through the receiver anyway. But, with today's equipment, I think there is far less need to up convert video at the receiver. Mike O. |

Buy the two most recent issues of Home Theater Mag. They have reviews
of the best receivers, including on article specifically on HDMI video passthrough. They picked out great receivers for $550 that will do exactly what you're looking for, plus more. |

ng.com... Yamaha RX-V863. (3 HDMI in) THE unit to be had for under $1K. Overstock.com has it right now for $749: http://tinyurl.com/63yl8r The only problem.... Yamaha really bungled the placement of the connectors on the back panel, in my opinion. If you have components with analog A/V connections, you will most likely have to run separate cables for audio and video from them. Just look at a picture of the back panel and you'll understand. =========================== No back panel picture is on the link your provided. |
