I'm not sure I should risk asking this but what the heck. What does
DOG mean or stand for?

AFAIAA D igital O n-screen G raphic . The easily ignored "wee" channel
identifier in the corner or the great big defacement telling you what
channel you are watching. Depending on your point of view

Well once upon on a time a long while ago in the very early days of
satellite TV it was useful for station identification...

Especially furrign stations so you knew if you were on the right sat or
not;!..

Easily ignored if it's of a correct unobtrusive size and transparent.

Not if it's large and florescent purple as BBC3 are visually ****ting on us

IIRC at weekends It was very useful to know whether one was tuned into Sat1
or RTL..

Yes, and BBC4 had adopted a policy of not showing the DOG during films,
but I notice they've gone back to having it all the time (except
dujring trails).
