You mnust have the wrong dialup number selected. Its most likely calling some
out of state number or locale.

I wish the dial in number no longer work. I started in the nearest town they
worked for about a month then it stopped so I went out further. Now I cant
even get a number because it wont connect to the number updater.

Walk through guided setup again. I'd imagine it'll do that toll-free
call to get the local number list again.

I called direct tv about that and they sent a complaint to Tivo from there I
was supposed to get a call from tivo with a 800 number to use. Tivo refuses
to give out the number they say the modem is broke and I need to replace the
system or if someone can point me to a site that has a way for me to use an
external modem or a usb adapter to connect I can do that.

just do a search on google for
Directv 708 replacement modem

lots of hits. one good one:

He doesnt need a replacement modem, he needs to get a good local number or at
1-800 entered into his DirecTV Tivo so it can make its weekly call without LD
charges!!!!

you might check the following as one source.
http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores...series2dtv.cfm

The following works with old Tivo Series 1 sometimes. However, my
external modem died and so far I have not been able to get 2
replacements to make a call.

You cant use an external modem with a DirecTV Tivo.

=========================

External modem SUCCESS!!!
Well thanks to a little help from spankspank I have successfully got a
TiVo
running 3.0 to use an external modem without any hacking!

The modem is a US Robotics Sportster 33.6. It's connected to the TiVos
using the original TiVo serial cable and a RadioShack DB9 - DB25
adapter.
What I had to do to get it working was...

I connected it to a computer using the modems original serial cable.

I then sent it these commands AT&D0&H0&I0&R1&W0 and AT&D0&H0&I0&R1&W1
using
hyper terminal, which disable DTR, RTS and flow control.

I disconnect it from the computer and connected it to the TiVo.

I then flipped the modem over and switched the "Terminal Override" dip
switch to ON. (I had to do this because the TiVo would not connect to
the
modem otherwise)

I set the TiVo dial prefix to ,#319 and did the test call, which
worked.

Then I tried a daily call which also completed, and just finished
successfully loading the data.

I know the connection speed is slow (i.e. 19,400), but it successfully
downloaded and indexed two days worth of data that it didn't have
before.

Dan

P.S. I tried 38,400 and athough it completed a test call, it would not
complete a daily call.

Hogwash. A broken modem wouldn't be racking up long distance charges.

I would say there is a problem with the modem. I cant get any new dialing
number because the modem wont connect to any of the numbers provided by
tivo. The long distance charges come from the phone calls taking just long
enough to try and connect but not communicating. I agree its odd most modems
fail completely but this one will dial just not connect. I have tried all
the numbers that direct tv suggested to speed up or slow down the dialing
and I have tried the input the number into the prefix settings. The local
lines have always been crazy I have to change my number about once every 3
months because the old numbers stop working. Direct tv says that tivo wont
give me an 800 number because the modem is the problem not the numbers. I
welcome you to try and call one of the number use the 850 area code and give
it a try "mind the long distance"
