What happens to small handheld battery powered TVs after switchover to
digital? Anyone know of any small upgrade that you can do to upgrade these into a digital set? You can get tiny USB dongles that turn your computer monitor into a digital TV, so the necessary equipment for digital TV reception can certainly be very small in size so there must be some way of adding a digital chip inside current small battery powered TVs? I know that digital needs more power and if I have a battery power TV that runs off 4AA batteries and lasts for a few hours, it probably will only last half that time to power digital, however there could also be solutions and ways around that too. There is definitely a market for this and doing upgrades for handheld TVs, I think they have been ignored completely in the digital TV revolution so far. John |

You buy a new digital one. Same as any TV, really. You can get tiny USB dongles that turn your computer monitor into a digital TV, The 'USB dongle' works in conjunction with your computer - not just the monitor. so the necessary equipment for digital TV reception can certainly be very small in size so there must be some way of adding a digital chip inside current small battery powered TVs? Does such a chip exist for ordinary TVs? -- *Why is 'abbreviation' such a long word? Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

... What happens to small handheld battery powered TVs after switchover to digital? Anyone know of any small upgrade that you can do to upgrade these into a digital set? No, it would have to be a do-it-yourself job. You could try using one of the Freeview receivers that fit into a large scart plug for example, but even that would be cumbersome, and the battery drain would make it impractical. There is definitely a market for this and doing upgrades for handheld TVs, I think they have been ignored completely in the digital TV revolution so far. Maplin do a range of battery operated portable Freeview TVs with screen sizes from 2 to 7 inches for around the same price as traditional analogue pocket TVs. |

... What happens to small handheld battery powered TVs after switchover to digital? They all stop working. Anyone know of any small upgrade that you can do to upgrade these into a digital set? Nope. There is definitely a market for this and doing upgrades for handheld TVs, I think they have been ignored completely in the digital TV revolution so far. No chance of an upgrade , but I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes new digital portables -- Alex "I laugh in the face of danger , then I hide until it goes away" |

They become useless and will be thrown away. I have one of these I bought for use as an extension viewfinder for a digital camera because it has a video input on a mini jack socket, but it hasn't been very good even for that. The display is fuzzy and dim compared with any modern mobile phone, and has a useful viewing angle of about 10 degrees. And it takes *three* AA cells. I'm not even sure if it's worth the Ebay costs to see if anybody wants it, so it'll probably go in the bin, like thousands of others. Rod. |

No chance of an upgrade , but I'm sure it won't be long before someone
makes new digital portables But aren't they likely to be DVB-H ie. Pay_through_the_nose_View? A DVB-T pocket set with a built in aerial is perfectly possible now but I suspect even Argos wint put up with 90% of them being returned. -- Graham %Profound_observation% |

They just make them non-returnable, like Freeview boxes, MP3 players, digital cameras... -- Max Demian |
