I'd love to know how he "didn't install it correctly".

Maybe he'd nailed it to the wall? ;-)

After paying 360quid insurance for the set I'd be ****ed off too.
Maybe he should have contended the incorrect installation decision first

No doubt Comets are insured against acts of vandalisium,
so he didn't achieve anything

Sounds to me like he didn't fit it securely and it fell and broke

Or, sealed up the ventilation holes and cooked it....

We will never know as the daily mail rag have purposely sensationalised
the story by removing the balance of his complaint (could have been
valid!) and just focusing on the freak show of the smashing incident to
sell their paper. A court transcript (if recorded and published) would
be interesting reading, and it may have been possible that Comet staff
have said something outstandardly stupid to make that man do what he did.

The local story is covered here ...

''' and that article's comments have been defaced, I don't quite know
what's going on here :-)

For the curious, here are the comments (obtained via the RSS

If you are as incensed as me over this, please contact comet, I
have.. here is the link. I think they should give the man a new
TV not a criminal record. They were at fault, they had his
money. They old him invalid insurance.

Obviously, the staff are not trained on Customer Service
otherwise it would not have got out of hand. There has to be a
resolution (middle ground)somewhere, but Comet obviously are
more interested in profit than looking after their customers.
Everyones comments are quite right - boycott them for being so
arrogent and so obstinate !!

I can understand the guys frustration, having to deal with some
brainless muppet who has been trained all about diversity, but
knows absolutely nothing about customer care. Anyone else who
finds themselves in this situation would do well to contact
Trading Standards, though after reading the comments so far, I
don't think Comet will have any customers left! At one time I
would have expected a Labour government to deal with this sort
of thing, but not any more. Taking on big business is totally
contrary to New Labour's Thatcherite principals.

Shop at John Lewis they have excellent customer care will match
any price and give you a five year guarantee deliver free to
your house , set it up....why would you go to anywhere else.?

i would have done exactley the same ; comet has a lot to answere
for they do not deserve custom and i will not use the store
again ; now this poor frustrated man will get a criminal record
through them ; they want to hang there heads in shame ; please
everyone boycott the place ;

The shop deserved everything it got, big companies should NOT
RIP CUSTOMERS OFF, we pay extortionate prices for insurance and
expect the company to honour them, I too would have felt the
impulse to smash a few as I walked away, perhaps they will think
before they brush some other poor person off. COME To COMET
....................NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a pity stores don't offer a feedback system like ebay. If I
want to buy anything it's the first place I look and usually
find a bargain. I've had my problems with Comet too, it took
multiple phone calls and finally a trip to the store along with
a threat to contact the papers and Watchdog to get any results.
After eight weeks I got my computer fixed the next day! I
recently had to get my video camera repaired which I got from
Currys, there was only two months left on it's five year
warranty, they sent me a box to parcel it in and it was returned
fixed two days later!

if ever i buy anything from Comet, i do it online and ether
collect..or get it delivered to avoid their pushy sales staff.

And, the staff are like sh!te hawks, hovering over you. When one
leaves another comes in for the kill, "Do you need any help?"
"NO!" How many times do you have to tell them...

ive had trouble with them too! My advice for electrical
purchases? Tesco, no quibble return if faulty!

p.s If its only 8 months, I'm pretty sure you are covered by
consumer law on this, regardless of an insurance policy. All
goods sold should be fit for purpose. Unless its accidental
damage. If it is, check your home insurance policy.
26 April 2008 10:33:24

The law is an ass. Its Comet who should be investigated by
trading standards. This is a PR disaster for them and I hope the
national press pick up this story! I will give them a swerve
from now on. How can you not fit a TV properly? Unless it fell
from a badly drilled wall bracket? No mention of the details in
this article. The insurance is particularly expensive and
obviously a waste of time. Its much cheaper to arrange your own
insurance or go direct to the manufacturer.

They say Curry's no worries, well I say Comet make you vomit!! I
had a problem with a music system that went back twice with a
total of three faults, but they still wouldn't change the
machine as they said it needed to be returned three seperate
times. I now but from Currys and whenever and it's rare anything
goes wrong they've change the machine at the store.

After reading this, I will certainly never buy from Comet again.
I noticed in the past how pushy they were to sell the overpriced
insurances.

While the gentleman should not have run amok with a hammer, this
is not the first time it has been alleged that Comet operates a
policy that obstructs customers from exercising their rights. Do
not shop at Comet - if your expensive purchase breaks down, they
will drive you to utter despair.

I have also had problems with Comet refusing to honour
warranties - they were keen enough to sell it but then tried to
find an excuse when the TV went wrong, and wouldn't honour it.
Boo Comet.

No one would pay £360 insurance unless intending to make a claim. The tv
came with a year guarantee free and with the cost of these tv's dropping so
fast the cost of replacement after the first year would make paying so much
for insurance madness.
Probably there is a policy of not repacing units. where insurance has been
taken out because anyone daft enough to buy it is daft enough to be conned
out of a replacement (not n this case)

After paying 360quid insurance for the set

This seems rather excessive. Why-oh-why do people pay this much

Still chuckling after my local PC World tried to sell me insurance on a
router that came with a lifetime guarantee

Unfortunatly, companies such as these prey on those less intelligent/savvy
than you. I guess not everyone would know about/notice the lifetime
guarantee, and I bet more than one have been conned into buying this totally
pointless insurance! *

* That's pointless for the customer, obviously rather good if you are the
retailer making a tidy commission...!

League Two - Gannon in silent Sky+ box protest

Eurosport - Wed, 21 May 13:03:00 2008

Stockport manager Jim Gannon is refusing to co-operate with Sky Sports
ahead of his side's League Two play-off final against Rochdale -
because of a dispute over his defective Sky+ box.

Gannon is believed to have had problems with his personal video
recorder for nine months, and is protesting against Sky's inability to
correct the problem.
